What we’ve been eating…

We have been eating our colors and more whole foods…at least during the week 😁

I wanted to share with you some of our yummy weekday meals starting with this lunch. We used the sweet kale salad kit and baked up some frozen air fryer chicken tenders.

These tenders were from Tyson and they were crispy and delicious. I have to add though that you need some kind of sauce to dip it in because they do run on the dryer side.

I mentioned in my last post the breakfast tacos I have been making with the Siete tortillas.

I roasted up some potatoes for the week to create a quick and delicious breakfast.

The addition of some yummy pickled veggies amped up the flavor!

Watermelon has been a go to snack recently. We get one good watermelon and we are on a roll with finding all the sweet, juicy ones.

For dinner one night we made a stir fry with yuba noodles. Yuba noodles are made from tofu and add a chewy texture and a bit of protein.

We did a combo of shrimp, broccoli, onion and mushroom. It was tasty and filling!

The protein pancakes from Kodiak Cakes and cherries have been another go to breakfast. I love cherries and am so happy it’s cherry season πŸ™‚

These are our eats as of late! What have you been munching on??

Siete Almond Flour Tortillas

I love making subs to more whole foods when given the chance. I had heard about the Siete brand if tortillas from a YouTuber and was very curious.

I am usually skeptical about “healthier” carb alternatives, but I am glad I took the leap to try them out.

They are pricey at almost $8 for 8 tortillas. I found them in my Sprout’s freezer section, but they may be in the refrigerator section of your grocery store.

I put them in my freezer so they last and they thaw out really quickly so it has not been a big deal. I cook them up with a little cooking spray on a non stick pan. They bubble up and become crisp and chewy.

I have been making breakfast burritos with them. They are thin and light but they taste exactly like a flour tortilla to me.

They have tortillas made with other flours like chickpea if that sounds more interesting. I am curious about the chickpea version but I am going to use the almond ones up first.

I am loving these tortillas and the wholesome ingredients. They are great for my weekday meals and super versatile.

Have you guys tried these tortillas? What did you think? Let me know in the comments!

Taco Tuuuuesdayyy

When Cinco de Mayo falls on a Tuesday, you gotta Taco Tuesday! Or at least that’s what my husband said…

I came home from work on Tuesday and he totally surprised me with a full taco set up! We had chicken, pico, guac, salsa, onions, radish, “sour cream” (Greek yog), and of course umm Sriracha to mix it all up πŸ˜€

This was so incredibly delicious and we had some leftover priduce that we extended Taco Tuesday in Taco Wednesday. Instead of chicken, we used shrimp seasoned with TJ’s taco seasoning and had the exact same set up. It was so yummy!

Since I still had tortillas leftover, I made myself a breakfast taco with scrambled eggs, sauteed/steamed kale, and obvi Sriracha. I realize I take my food pictures pre-Sriracha so I intentionally made sure the Sriracha was on this time!

I never thought about making legit tacos at home before (I know, silly me!) but after this I am wondering what other delicious concoctions we could come up with…stay tuned!

Did you guys do Taco Tuesday last week? What kind of tacos do you make at home? I would love to hear all the ideas!

Sonoratown and Somisomi

Remember that post I shared with you guys about Worth It? That show on YouTube that goes to different restaurants to try a food at three different price points?

IMG-20200210-WA0001

Well, they tried tacos and since then Sonoratown has been on our mind. They kept talking about how amazing the flour tortillas were and I just knew me+Sonoratown=match made in heaven.

IMG-20200210-WA0021

When we arrived there was a line and initially it didn’t seem to be moving but we managed to get through the line and order all in about 30 minutes.

IMG-20200210-WA0007

After that wait we basically ordered one of everything on the menu.

We got two tacos-a chicken and beef, a shredded beef chivichanga (mini burrito), a chicken burrito, and a tostada.

20200208_132009

IMG-20200210-WA0003

They gave us salsa to go with it all and we both loved the red. It was fresh and bright with a good bit of spice.

Out of the food I loved everything. The tostada was my favorite along with the tacos and chivichanga. The burrito was good and ended up being the hubby’s favorite.

20200208_132016

I am oh so happy we got to try this spot out!

Afterwards we needed something sweet so we paid the meter and headed to Little Tokyo to find some dessert.

Somisomi met all our requirements so we stopped in and hubs got the milk softserve and I got matcha. Normally we get them in the taiyaki cones but this time we switched it up a bit.

IMG-20200210-WA0006IMG-20200210-WA0019

We ordered the softserve in cups and got the taiyaki on the side filled with nutella.

We had a few bites of our softserve before the piping hot taiyaki came out. Oh.em.gee. My life has been changed. This is definitely the way to do it!

IMG-20200210-WA0024

The hot, chewy taiyaki dipped into the cold, cresmy softserve is the best mixing of temps and textures 🀀

It was a pretty fantastic way to spend the day!

Have you had taiyaki? What did you think?

Thanks for reading! See you next time!

Oh the food we will eat…The State

During our move in week in order to get some sanity we decided to do a little date night. We went and saw a movie and happened to make in time for the happy hour menu (which is apparently all day on Monday).

It was such a beautiful day we decided to sit outside and take in the weather. After perusing the menu we decided on the Brussels sprouts, short rib tacos, and a burger.

I really loved the Brussels-the crispy, crunchy, charred pieces are always my favorite and that dollop of goat cheese on top rounded it all out and added that much needed creamy tang.

20190701_194624

The husband really loved the short rib tacos. Besides looking beautiful (those colors!) these were meaty and fresh and crunchy and wonderful!

20190701_194628

The burger was a wonderful cheeseburger of sorts and it did end up falling apart towards the end, but it was worth the mess. The salad on the side was really pretty and a good standard salad-nothing to write home about!

20190701_195544

20190701_195548

We headed out for frozen yogurt after this, but really enjoyed our experience at The State. Since our whole order was off the happy hour menu the whole thing ended up being under $30? That’s a pretty cheap date night πŸ™‚

What’s your favorite date night spot?

Austin

Good morning people!

I hope you are all having a lovely day/week/month! I wanted to share with you guys our Austin trip. I didn’t end up taking many pictures so I am able to get 4ish days in Austin into one blog post πŸ™‚

We had decided to do this Austin trip because we wanted to check out the area and see if it’s somewhere we would settle down at. After a series of unfortunate/stressful events we are seeing it as signs from God that Austin is not the place for us!

20190601_072129

We had coffee and snacks at the airport, but I only got the coffee

Even though it’s not the place for us to stay forever (I’ll never say never so who knows), it is the place for BBQ and tacos. So after getting our rental car and dropping of bags at our AirBnB we headed to Terry Black’s for brisket.

We’ve heard that Texas is “cow country” and they have the best brisket in all the land. After having Terry Black’s I do agree…

20190601_162347

We also ended up getting this massive rib which ended up being my favorite part of the meal along with cornbread and green beans. All I can say is that all of the food was delicious. I highly recommend!

We came around 3/4pm and it was great timing because the line was short. The next time I turned around to look at the line we had gotten our food and were in the process of finding a table. Let me tell you that line was out the door!

The next day we headed into Dallas to meet up with B’s little brother and his GF. While waiting for them we (read: I) found myself getting a little hungry so we stopped by Malai. They gave us complimentary sticky rice with this eggplant sauce and we ordered the tuna spring rolls.

The tuna was seared rare and the rolls were so light and fresh! Perfect for a warm day!

We ended up getting tacos with them at Velvet taco, but I wanted to be present and involved and got 0 pictures!

Dinner that night was kind of a fail. The hubs and I were super excited about Austin Taco Project-they had such great reviews on Yelp, but the food was not great.

The next day we started off fresh at First Watch. When we lived in Oklahoma we used to go here somewhat often and sadly there’s not one in CA so we had to have it while we were in TX.

I ordered a garden hash with eggs over easy! I had no idea it would come with fruit and buttered toast (it had been that long since we had been). This hash is something I would absolutely get again if we had a First Watch next to us.

20190603_110415

B got their breakfast protein (power?) wrap and it came with some fruit too. Win for us!!

20190603_110435

We didn’t end up eating lunch since we had a somewhat late breakfast. We hit up a couple of malls and watched Ma before heading to dinner at Bun Belly. We were initially thinking pizza, but the pizza place ended up being too far from our post dinner plans so we switched it up a bit and boy are we glad!

20190603_192202

We ordered the beef belly, the soft-shell crab, and a vegetarian one with eggplant. We also got some shrimp spring rolls to start!

The shrimp spring roll was delicious! It was light and the paired so well with their warm peanut sauce. I have never had warm peanut sauce with the cool spring roll, but wowza was it amazing!

The baos were so yummy too. The bun was so soft and fluffy and the fillings were so flavorful. I loved the contrast in textures with the crab and vegetarian one, but my favorite was the beef belly πŸ˜‹

What I failed to mention was that before dinner we had stopped by Uncle Nicky’s and grabbed a cruller. This was one of the things I had seen on Insta before Austin and pretty much knew I needed to try before leaving. After dinner we headed back to the car and ate this and it was honestly so delicious and sweet and light. I was sad we didn’t have another!

20190603_194611

We walked around till the improv show we had bought tickets for and that pretty much concludes our last full day in Austin.

We woke up the next morning pretty excited to be coming back home. We had already decided on Torchy’s for breakfast tacos before heading to the airport so that’s what we did.

These tacos were really good, but the one I always love is The Wrangler (I think that’s the brisket one).

We had some time to kill so we mosied around the area before heading to return our rental and get on our flight.

That concludes our Austin trip! I am honestly so glad we visited Austin and if you’ve never been I think you should. Besides having great tacos and brisket they have some lovely people and it’s worth it to go for just that.

Have you been to Austin? What’s your favorite taco/bbq spot?

Mini LA Food Crawl

We had been meaning to go around the city and try out some pizza places so we ended up doing just that along with a couple of pit stops for a fish taco and another for pies πŸ˜€

This is maybe more of a mini food crawl, but it was still tasty and fun! At each of these places except the pie place we shared one item so we weren’t super stuffed and sick.

Our first stop was Mulberry Street Pizzeria.

20190112_125954

The pizza was SUPER thin, but maintained it’s crispiness. I did some serious damage to my mouth because it was SUPER hot, but it was so worth it.

20190112_130143

Ricky’s Tacos was another place we had heard so much about.Β They are known for their fish tacos. The truck lists their many taco accolades including being one of the top fish tacos in the nation!

20190112_133127

The fish in this taco was light and had a really great crunch from the batter, the cabbage added some much needed freshness to the fried fish. The tortilla did a great job of holding everything together. We topped it with the spicy salsa and their special mix of mayo and mustard and it was simply delicious!

20190112_134033

Pizzanista was our next stop!

20190112_140333

This place had the most interesting pies and the great thing is they have vegan pizza with vegan cheese and “meat.” Since we were comparing pizzas we had to get a slice of cheese. They were kind and split it for us.

20190112_141020

There was a lot more cheese on this slice and the crust was thicker. It was a good slice of pizza, but not my favorite compared to other spots!

We walked to our next and final place-The Pie Hole. Pie Hole has sweet and savory pies to please the whole crowd. We got two of their more popular pies-The Earl Grey and the Cereal Pie.

20190112_144642

The Earl Grey was very light and smooth. I tasted more chocolate then tea. The filling was nice and fluffy, but contrasted with pistachios sprinkled throughout.

20190112_144805

The Cereal Pie was denser. The filling was similar to cheesecake in texture and had fruity pebbles mixed in. It was topped with a few different cereals you may remember from your childhood (or last night) like Fruit Loops and Lucky Charms.

20190112_144757

They were both very different and very delicious!

The two places we would go back to are probably Mulberry Street and Pie Hole! It’s not that Pizzanista and Ricky’s didn’t taste yummy and in fact I recommend you try all four of these places if you get the chance!

Have you ever done a food crawl where you live? What’s your favorite spot?

Brunch with Bae

Do you guys remember when I talked about Blu Jam Cafe? It was a pretty excellent experience last time and sadly we hadn’t been back since then. I guess that’s the issue of living in LA. Too many places to go and not enough time or belly space πŸ˜€

IMG-20180722-WA0004

We made time last week and hit up Blu Jam for round 2. I got the Migas this time and bae got the Powerhouse.

Migas came with eggs, beef chorizo, mozz cheese (I subbed cheddar), and tortilla chips. It came with a side of the crispiest breakfast potatoes and a few corn tortillas! This was honestly me in a breakfast bowl.

20180722_133443

Bae’s Powerhouse came with egg whites with spinach and two pieces of chicken with salsa to top it all off.

IMG-20180722-WA0005

It was a hot day and so we ended up skipping their famous french toast this time around and stopping by Menchie’s for some frozen yogurt.

I got pineapple sorbet and cake batter with some mango popping balls!

IMG-20180722-WA0002

Bae got all the sorbets: pineapple, watermelon, and honeydew plus some strawberry froyo. He added some mochi, almonds, and whipped cream on top πŸ™‚

IMG-20180722-WA0001

Perfect to cool down us and our sweet teeth!

Are you a sweet breakfast person or savory? Let me know in the comments below.

Tocaya

Tocaya describes themselves as “modern organic Mexican cuisine” and I can say I agree. They use organic ingredients to create a twist on Mexcian flavors. However you spin it I can say the food is delicious!

20180706_185749

This was our first trip to Tocaya and it included a bowl, a couple of tacos, and a couple of sides. We had to at least get through part of the menu!

We got two delicious tacos: a Barrio Style and the other Baja Chipotle.

20180706_185918.jpg

The Barrio Style came with roasted tomato salsa, avocado, red onion, and cilantro. We picked beef picadillo and jalapeΓ±o jack for our protein and queso.

The Baja Chipotle came with cabbage, sweet chipotle sauce, vegan chipotle crema, and cilantro. We picked sea bass and got the cheese (I can’t remember which) on the side.

Both tacos were super flavorful and bright, but the winner for both of us was the Baja Chipotle. The sea bass was beautifully seasoned and it paired well with the other flavors in the taco.

We picked two sides to go with our tacos: the roasted cauliflower and the Barrio Fruit bowl. The cauliflower tasted like curried cauliflower and it was good, but not amazing. The fruit bowl was seasoned with lime and chili and was super bright, but I was hoping for sweeter fruit?! Both sides were good, but I would definitely check out some of the other sides next time.

20180706_185916

The bowl we went for was the Fajita Del Rey which came with sautΓ©ed poblano peppers and onions, Spanish rice, black beans, vegan chipotle crema, guac, and pico de gallo. We picked chicken tinga as our protein and got the queso fresco on the side. I LOVED this bowl and would honestly get it again.

20180706_185913

It had some spice and planty of creaminess from the guac and crema to cool it down. Each component was delicious on it’s own, but even better when mixed together. The chicken was the star in this bowl-it was warm and shredded and perfectly cooked.

Post dinner I still needed something sweet so we stopped by a macaron place and I got an almond and passion fruit macaron. Looking at these I feel like I need a couple more right now!

20180706_191742

So yummy!

Have you been to Tocaya? What did you think?

What you eat after you climb rocks

Okay so maybe this is more of a what I eat after I climb rocks, but maybe you eat these things too after climbing rocks?!?

We recently did another indoor rock climbing situation. To be honest, I don’t think it’s for me…we did auto belay and once I climbed up I had a hard time letting go of the wall so I could be dropped down. That being said I’m still quite eager to go sky diving some day πŸ˜€

After all that we decided to grab some food and found Surf n’ Turf Tacos where they specialize in all things taco.

20180630_123711

Chips and self serve salsa for the win! The chips were warm which made me very happy πŸ™‚

20180630_123832

Chicken and chicken were our tacos of choice which came with chicken, cilantro, onion, and chili sauce. The tacos were fresh and super savory. They had this cheese layer on the bottom of the tortilla which held everything together.

20180630_124058

We did opt for a seafood burrito to share. We ended up getting the mahi mahi burrito which came with rice, beans, cheese, onions, cilantro, and baja sauce.

20180630_124349

I wasn’t sure how I would feel about having fish and cheese together, but the burrito ended up being really delicious. The beans, rice and cheese combined to make a creamy texture which was broken up by the chunks of mahi mahi.

20180630_124424

It was very filling, but we always have room for dessert πŸ˜€

There was a Rita’s close by and some mango Italian ice with a dollop of soft serve sounded like a great way to end the afternoon. It was perfection!

20180630_130925

I am a little curious now, what do you guys eat after you go rock climbing?
