Treat Review

We LOVE treats in this house and a majority of the posts that I do contain some sort of treat because it makes my heart happy. I thought a fun way to share some treats from the past month would be to do a little review.

Let’s start with this cereal pie from Pie Hole. If I’m being completely honest neither of us are big into pie, but this was more like a cheesecake with fruity cereal mixed into the cheesecake batter. I have no complaints and would give this a 5/5 stars!

You guys know how obsessed I have been with Baked and how much I love their treats. When I saw this ube brownie I needed to try it out so that is what we did. This is 3/5 stars because this felt more like a cake in texture than a brownie. The flavor was a yummy, mild ube flavor but I was expecting chewy fudgy brownie and this was not that.

After our outrageous Reeses apple from Rocky Mountain Chocolate Factory we knew we needed to try out their other sweets. We had high expectations for this chocolate caramel covered marshmallow. I was imagining milk chocolate with creamy caramel and fluffy marshmallow, but instead it was milk chocolate with hard, crunchy caramel and not much marshmallow. Rating? 3/5

An extreme high note from Rocky Mountain was this concoction called an “avalanche.” It’s Rice Krispy cereal mixed with peanut butter and marshmallow and topped with little mini chocolate chips. This was one of my favorite things of life. I rate this a million/5 ๐Ÿ˜€

I’m planning on doing these every now and then just because I enjoy reading them and I find them helpful. Let me know what you guys think!

Also, what are some of your favorite treats?

Trader Joe’s Treats Review

We absolutely love Trader Joe’s all year round but the seasonal stuff really gets us giddy. I cannot tell you how many videos I’ve watched and blog posts I’ve read hauling and reviewing Trader Joe’s goodies this season-it’s definitely been an obsession.

Over Thanksgiving break we had hauled quite a few goodies from Trader Joe’s to try out for ourselves and since I love posts like these I figured I would share our thoughts ๐Ÿ™‚

Jumping into our first item are the Apple Cider Cake Donuts. These were coated in cinnamon sugar on the outside which would lead you to believe they may fall in the too sweet category, but these were very mild in sweetness. In terms of texture this fell on the dryer side of things, but not in an unpleasant way. I wasn’t reaching for water with every bite, but maybe every few bites? We really enjoyed these, but I don’t think they would be a staple in our house.

The Danish Kringle in almond was something we had no idea what to expect. I knew it was a pastry and people absolutely love it, but we aren’t big pastry people (usually). THIS though was fantastic. The almond paste filling was super nice if you enjoy the flavor-if you don’t then stay away! I will also say this was SUPER sweet between the filling and the icing on top. We tried warming a piece in the microwave and in the toaster oven. The toaster oven definitely had the better texture, but be careful because the icing becomes super hot super fast.

Steering away from the sweets for a minute to check out these Cornbread Poppers. These were filled with pepperjack cheese and serrano chilis, but they are by no means spicy in any way. The outside was a cornbread with the inside filling being a gooey cheese, but when I got these I had assumed it would be a cornbread ball that had cheese and serrano chilis mixed in. Because it wasn’t that I think I was a bit disappointed, but overall these were pretty yummy.

The Soft Baked Peanut Butter Chocolate Chip Cookies are something we had been eying for a long time. I had one cookie from this and hubby finished the pack so it’s probably safe to say I thought they were fine and he LOVED them. These are super peanut-buttery in flavor and the chocolate chips felt a bit like an afterthought. If you love peanut butter cookies you will definitely enjoy these!

Staying in the cookie category this next purchase was an impulse buy. We were in line waiting to check out when we saw the customer next to us had these in her basket. Thank God TJ’s isn’t a big store because I was able to speed walk there and back in good time to check out. All that being said, these were a fail for us. I am not a big fan of crispy cookies and that is what all of these were. In my head I was imagining a variety of butter cookies, but I definitely should have looked at the images a bit closer. As I always say after one of these incidents, “at least now we know!”

The last item are these Ridge Cut Potato Chips with Horseradish and Chive. These were nice and crunchy, but not as crunchy as a kettle chip. In terms of flavor they are very similar to a sour cream and onion with a hint of horseradish. I feel like horseradish lovers and those who aren’t horseradish fans would enjoy these. I know hubby thought these were just okay, but I’ll probably have some with sandwiches and finish off the bag. The combination of us not buying chips often enough and there being a large amount of chips in the world to try I can say safely we probably won’t be rebuying these.

If you stuck it out this long thank you so much and I hope you enjoyed this post as much as I enjoyed writing it! I know all these items weren’t seasonal, but what are some of your current favorite Trader Joe’s goodies (seasonal or not)?

Have a great week and happy Monday!

Cookie Jar

Okay, so we don’t have a cookie jar, but if we did it would be overflowing. Unintentionally, we went on a cookie adventure of sorts these past couple of months. It was all kicked off by hubby ordering cookies from PDX Cookie Co.

It was Valentine’s, he knows I (we) love cookies so it was super sweet and so were the cookies ๐Ÿ˜‰

After ordering cookies from 4 different companies I thought it would be fun to come and share with your our favorites and lesser favorites.

PDX cookies were incredible-straight from the tupperware container they were send in they were super good. Warmed up even better! honestly could not tell you which flavors we had because hubby ordered them. There were 12 cookies, 2 of each flavor and was about $47 after tax and shipping. Despite being filled with candies, cookies, and other goodies the cookie base was still delicious. The texture had crunchy edges and a soft and chewy interior. I know I preferred the chocolatey and peanut buttery ones, but the hubby did love the pink ones filled with frosted animal cookies and other deliciousness.

After reading a cookie box review online I ordered Bang Cookies. The writer of that review said that the salted chocolate chip cookies at Bang were better than Levain’s. I ordered 2 salted chocolate chip, PBJ, kitchen sink, white chocolate mac, and double chocolate. This was definitely the best in terms of pricing. At the time if you got 6 cookies you got free shipping. I paid the least for Bang Cookies out of the companies we tried-I believe the total was $27 or $28. In terms of taste, I have not had Levain yet, but these salted chocolate chip cookies were incredible. They were chewy and melty (we warmed them in the microwave) and incredible! All the cookies were amazing, but the chocolate chip were my hands down winner!

I ordered Big Fat Cookie after reading the same review page. These were the #1 best cookies on her page. Price wise these were around $32 after shipping and tax. These cookies were big and fat and filled with all the goods. I ordered Nuckin’ Futz which all had peanut butter of some sorts whether through reeses or pb chips. There were 4 cookies in a pack and they were heavy 6oz cookies. These were good, but I don’t think these were the best. It’s a cookie (good) filled with delicious candies and chocolates (good), but I didn’t have that eye roll to the back of my head moment with these. Maybe I’m crazy?

The last cookie company we tried was Fat and Weird Cookie Co. These may have been the most expensive per cookie, but we were intrigued. If you’re curious they were around $25 for 3 cookies. I know hubby had a hard time even being able to order because they would sell out so quickly! Needless to say we felt pretty accomplished when we finally placed an order!

When the cookies came I will not lie we were a little disappointed by the size. I’m not sure if you can tell, but these were the smallest cookies of the four. In terms of taste they were subpar even if you don’t take price into consideration. When you do consider price these were a fail!

If you were to try any of these cookie companies I would recommend PDX and/or Bang. I thought they were equally delicious in different ways. PDX had interesting mix-ins and were a nice chewy, fat cookie. Bang cookies felt like a classic cookie in terms of appearance (still chewy and thick) and taste. In terms of pricing I do think it’s an experience situation and not every week/month type thing. I also think these would be great gifts if you know a cookie lover!

Let me know if you guys have ever tried any of these cookies and what you thought OR if you’ve had other cookies shipped to you which ones you love.

HomeState

If you know me at all you know that I have a true love for breakfast and brunch and an even truer love for taco so during our excursions last weekend we decided to make a pitstop for some tacos at HomeState.

IMG-20171105-WA0000

I had a nagging headache, but the delicious smells and happy vibes in this place plus the fact we had tacos coming our way made me one happy human!

We ended up getting their queso (cheese sauce for those not familiar with Tex-Mex). The queso was good, but I wouldn’t have minded a bit more heat ๐Ÿ˜‰

IMG-20171105-WA0053

We got 4 tacos total and since my sweet hubs is not a die-hard breakfast person a couple were non-breakfast tacos.

We got the blanco which included egg whites, mushrooms, monterey jack.

IMG-20171105-WA0002

The pecos which had eggs and brisket

IMG-20171105-WA0050

The chicken which was achiote, guac, and cabbage slaw

IMG-20171105-WA0010

The picadillo which was ground beef, potatoes, carrots, cabbage slaw, and pickled jalapeรฑos

IMG-20171105-WA0009

The tacos were so good and the freshly made flour tortillas really added extra goodness to each taco. We always ask ourselves after visiting a new place if we would return and for this place it was a definite yes!
