Cutting down and Cleaning out

I’ve been avoiding writing this post because writing this post means I will have to stick with it…

Long story short I decided after our move that I will not be buying any more clothes, accessories, or shoes until after July 2020. I kinda avoided telling hubby for a little while too because, again, saying it out loud would make it a concrete thing that I would have to follow through on.

I took the plunge and told him because honestly there’s nothing quite like a move to encourage you to get rid of things and question your decision of buying stuff. We did donate a bunch of clothes before the move and some after, but it really opened my eyes to the amount of things we acquired in just a couple of years.

The things I have now are things I feel like I will wear and use and love, but I really wanted to test that theory out. Do you guys have a ton of things to wear but only rotate through a few things? I know I do, so I wanted to see if I could encourage myself to wear more of things I already own.

At the end of the year the things I haven’t worn are going to be donated. I feel good and strong about this now, but I know it will get tough because I do love clothes and accessories and shoes…

I decided to do this for a few reasons:

  1. Avoid being wasteful-I keep buying new things so I don’t get as much use out of my clothes as I could/should.
  2. Easy to keep organized-I don’t have clothes overflowing out of my dresser/closet. This also allows me to see what items I am missing or what items I may need more of.
  3. Buying clothes/shoes/accessories is more of a want at this point and not a need. I have enough clothes for every occasion and season. I have more than enough jackets for the winter and plenty of dresses and shorts for the summer.
  4. A perk of not buying more stuff is saving some money honeyyy 😉
  5. It will get the creative juices flowing in terms of coming up with outfits and pairing things up that I may not have thought of otherwise.

I have plenty of rational reasons in my head, but I am keeping my fingers crossed that I am able to stick it out and do the darn thing. I will definitely do my best at keeping you guys updated…maybe even like a monthly update?!

Thanks for reading lovely peeps! Let me know if you’ve ever done something like this and how it went? Any tips on how to get through?

A few things I do to make cooking easier

I wrote a post a little while ago about what I do to make my life a little simpler and I thought it would be fun to share one that is specific to cooking. Leave it to me to bring food into anything and errything 😀 sorrynotsorry.

The days I am off and hubby works I try to cook an actual meal. I try to plan these meals out at the beginning of the week so I know what and when I need to get things. For example, I may grab cauliflower to go with our salmon on Friday, but I wouldn’t get the salmon till later in the week.

Hubs and I try to knock out our big grocery shopping in one day usually at the beginning of the week. Mind you, there’s only two of us so this isn’t too difficult. We grab our fruits, veggies, and proteins that have a good shelf life to keep us stocked for the week. We’ve actually become really good at this. At the beginning of the week our fridge is full and packed and by the end it’s pretty empty.

It’s a carrot hotdog!!

I prep as many ingredients as I can earlier in the week. I think I talked about this a long time ago…I don’t cook things up and put them in ready to go containers. I will cut up my veggies I need for the week (that won’t go soggy or bad) or marinade my chicken that I will be using in the next couple of days to make things simpler.

I try to utilize my cooking appliances. Again, keep in mind I am cooking for two people and have never really had to cook for a crowd so this might be easier for me than some of you. If I am planning on using the oven to roast veggies I will try to make my protein on the stove or vice versa. If I am making a one pan chicken and veggies then I don’t think about this, but if I’m not this is a way I can make sure things get done together and nothing is sitting around getting cold.

When I am cooking I clean up as I go. This prevent cross contamination (YAAY!). It also means by the time dinner is cooked I am done with a majority of the clean up and I can sit down and enjoy it (double YAAY)!

A few things I do to make life easier

In my 28 years of being alive I have learned a few things to keep my life running as smoothly as possible. By the end of this you may think I’m crazy, but I promise my house is not intensely organized as this may make it sound, but it keeps it organized enough that we know where everything is and it looks nice and neat 😉

1. I clean throughout the week. I can’t concentrate if things are a mess and so I try to keep up with the tidying as much as possible. For example I will do a quick sweep and vacuum, tidy up our vanity, wipe down the kitchen counter…small things that make a difference. Also this way you’re not stuck with a major cleaning job at the end of the week…that would drive me crazy!

2. I never throw clothes on the floor. Seriously, I have never done this unless I am creating piles to give away, throw away, sell, and keep. Even as a kid I’ve thrown dirty clothes in the hamper and clean clothes wherever they go. I think side note to this is that I do try to put things back where they belong at least by the end of the day.

3. I get things together the night before. This could be for anything an interview, work, travel. For example let’s use work. I will prep my snack and lunch, fill up my water bottle, and get my scrubs out so I have to do as little thinking in the morning as possible.

These are just a few of the things I do to keep myself sane, but they go a very long way!

A long time ago I remember B saying something about doing things now that you will thank yourself for later. I am a VERY strong advocate of this! It might be unpleasant or annoying in the moment, but I know I always thank my past self for having the insight to know myself enough to take care of things.

What do you guys do that you thank yourselves for later? Leave it in the comments!
