Labor Day Weekend

The only thing I love more than a good relaxing weekend is a good relaxing weekend of good eats!

I actually have some eats from the week mixed in because good food is good food no matter when you eat it. Also, I think my brain is tired so forgive me if I say some off the wall things in this post πŸ™‚

On Tuesday I had this simple breakfast of egg frittata from Trader Joes, a waffle and some blackberries. The egg frittata has been compared to the Starbuck’s sous vide egg bites, but this was not my favorite on it’s own. I did put it in a tortilla later in the week with some cheese and enjoyed it MUCH more that way.

For dinner that night we had some leftover ground beef so hubby whipped up some burgers and we are still on the carrot fries kick!

Fast forward to Thursday night our Gobble box arrived. Since we both had work and hubs actually had to work late we made a dish from the box on Friday night: Souvlaki marinated salmon…I’ll do a whole post about this later on this week!

Saturday morning included workouts and grocery shopping! I was starving and decided to pick up a turkey pesto sandwich from Sprout’s. Sometimes a sandwich and some potato chips just hits the spot and it deffo did…noms! I was only able to eat half the sammie and half the chips before I was full.

We made an early dinner (linner, really) of the baked eggs in channa masala from Gobble before hubby had to head out to a work thing. I ended up hanging out and binging on all the reality TV on Hulu.

It was a little past 10:30pm when he was heading home and I was feeling the hungers again and Blaze sounded like a great idea so we picked me up a simple pie. I ate the whole things minus 2 slices. The hubs ate one of those….

I ate the last slice with some tomatoes the next day (banana for dessert)!

Sunday was our first full day off together so we made the most of it and headed to Santa Monica. I really wanted Sidecar Doughnuts and went for their yeast glazed doughnut. They are just so good! You can’t go wrong with this place.

We were both pretty tired as we walked around so we decided to grab a snack. I’m normally not an energy drink person, but I just felt like the day called for it. I saw this Alani Nu in Hawaiian shaved ice and felt like it sounded so incredible. The hubs found some gummies.

The energy drink was DELISH! LOVED IT! The gummies were not great, BUT hubby totally enjoyed them. He loved them so much he bought a few more the next day!

We picked up a few baked goods and headed home to make some burgers (we have a serious problem with burgers).

Burgers-delicious! Sadly dessert did not go as well…we had stopped by Milk Bar and Alcove. The cookie and birthday cake truffles from Milk Bar were good, but for whatever reason the cakes from Alcove were not.

The next day we did some more grocery shopping for the week and made our last Gobble dinner. It was a honey harissa shrimp dish!

Anaheim adventures

We went on a mini little road trip to Anaheim and found ourselves close to the Anaheim Packing House. We had decided to grab lunch at Cultivation Kitchen so we stopped there first.

Cultivation Kitchen is a really beautiful, earthy space that’s filled with light and greenery. We ordered, took our number, and got seated.

Hubby had ordered a mix-n-match healthy plate with organic chicken, roasted cauliflower, and roasted broccoli. His dish was a plate of heavenly flavors. If we ever get the chance to come back I will definitely be doing a healthy plate!

I ordered the SLT grilled grass fed beef, avocado, arugula, caramelized red onions, roasted tomatoes and red peppers with smoked tomato-jalapeno jam. The sandwich was very good, but a little on the greasy end. The salad served on the side was bright and fresh and delicious.

I think this is a good spot if you’re looking for some whole, yummy tasting food. Of course, you guys know I need something sweet and much to my luck there was a Honey & Butter trailer right outside the restaurant.

This place has some of the best macarons I’ve had. Their buttercream filling is so yummy! I got a fruity pebbles and a milk and honey flavored one. They were both so good, but my favorite was the fruity pebbles.

After our lunch we walked around the Packing House and took in some music. We hung out until it was time for us to meet a friend for some tea and walking around. It’s always a fun foodie adventure coming to/near the Packing House.

Coronado

Good morning!

On a Tuesday morning I headed out with a friend and co-worker to the last session of our leadership conference. I don’t know if you remember, but for the session in April and June hubby was able to come along. Sadly, this time around he had work and couldn’t make it. I was bummed, but super grateful I didn’t have to make the trip alone!

I was excited to have the opportunity to finish the program, but also sad that it would be the last time we would be coming. It was a really great conference and I learned a lot about leadership and myself.

While in Coronado, we made the most of it and had some yummy food.

The first night we went to Maretalia. It’s a lovely Italian joint on the Island and we walked to it. The walk felt long since we were all hungry, but once we got there we were in carb heaven!

After sitting down we were offered bread and a lovely gentleman came around with the bread choices. There was no choice for me other than the big fluffy slices of focaccia. The bread was salty and soft and served with softened butter in a pool of olive oil with a piece of roasted garlic on top. I could eat that bread everyday for the rest of my life!

I ordered the shrimp campanelle and boy was this good! The shrimp were perfectly cooked and there were tomatoes that added brightness and acidity. I asked for some parm on top which added a nice flavor and depth. The pasta was cooked al dente and I am sitting here drooling thinking about this dish.

By the time we left the sun was starting to set and our walk home was much easier with the carbs in our belly. We were all tired from our day of traveling and conferencing that we headed back to the hotel to settle in and get some rest.

I had a hard time sleeping-always do without hubby-but I finally gave up, woke up a little earlier than planned and headed to the gym.

As much as I enjoyed the conference it was a lot of sitting and I am not used to that much sitting. The morning workouts gave me life and helped with the restlessness that sitting for long periods causes me to have.

After conference we made dinner plans and walked to another spot on the island-Miguel’s. I had been craving tacos and tortilla chips and queso and had gotten many recommendations for this place. It was another 30 minute walk to this place (we passed Maretalia on the way).

Once we arrived we were seated and served warm chips, salsa, and queso. The chips were salty and crispy, the queso was creamy, and the salsa was bright. It was really difficult to stop eating them.

The server was really nice and let us know we could order two different kinds of tacos so we could try more than one. I ordered a swordfish taco and a ahi tuna taco. The swordfish was grilled and flavorful and served in a soft corn tortilla. The ahi tuna was seared and chopped up and served in a hard taco shell.

If I am being completely honest, I ate most of the ahi tuna taco and half of the swordfish taco. I ended up eating the rest of the swordfish, but not the whole taco. It was served with rice and beans and I think I took one small bite of each, but was too full to bother even trying to eat anymore.

We walked to Hotel Del Coronado and saw these incredible sand castles. I think there had to have been a competition of some sort. We ended up unintentionally taking the long way home so it was a long walk, but we didn’t mind. We were fueled with yummy food and beautiful weather.

After the conference Thursday we headed back home. I was super excited to see hubby, but by the time I got back he was still at work. I did come home to this which was so sweet. He is honestly the best husband ever!

We ended up going out to sushi that night at Sushi Hachi. We ordered some edamame and a few rolls. We both really enjoyed these and they were on the fresher end of the spectrum rather than the fried or cooked rolls we sometimes get. I feel like this might turn into one of our regular sushi spots πŸ™‚

Oh the food we will eat…Paul Martin’s

One particular Friday night, after watching Hobbs and Shaw at AMC, we decided to grab some dinner at Paul Martin’s.

Mind you I had already been eyeballing this place and seen some things (quite a few things) that really piqued my interest and knew we needed to come here. We arrived and were seated pretty quickly. I immediately loved the vibe-it was a pretty filled restaurant with a good buzz of chatter filling the air. It was lively!

We glanced at the menu and figured out what we wanted to order and went for it! We decided on the grilled artichoke for an app, the short rib for our main, and picked roasted cauliflower and Brussels to add on as sides.

We started with this beautiful bread and butter situation. The bread was just slightly warm, but so soft in the middle and crusty on the outside. The butter was salted and soft-super easy to spread! I honestly don’t know if there is anything that tops a good bread and butter combo for me…it’s just so good.

We have never had artichokes and we were a bit confused on how to eat it. To be completely honest we just looked it up and I kind of wish we had looked it up while there because we wasted a lot of edible artichoke :/ The pieces we did eat though were super flavorful and had that lovely charred, salty delicious taste that I adore!

The roasted cauliflower and Brussels were so good. The cauliflower was nice and garlicky from the pieces of roasted garlic that were hidden amongst the chunks of cauliflower. The Brussels were crispy and soft and absolutely delicious.

The short rib was so tender you didn’t need a knife and the mashed potatoes that came with it were very smooth and creamy.

The food was a HUGE hit with us and the service was really great! We will definitely be keeping this place in mind as an option for date night. If you have a Paul Martin’s near you, you absolutely should check it out!

In terms of selling the house we’ve made a few repairs and gotten things in order to continue the escrow process. We are ready to be done!

We’ve also been selling things on FB market (thanks for the tip Mackenzie) in order to downsize and live a little more clutter free!

In terms of staying strong and healthy we’ve been working out (basically everyday since I had been waiting to start work). I continue cycling through our gym, the apartment gym, and HIIT at home. We’ve been loving post dinner walks when the weather cools down.

For work-hubs started a while ago and I have completed hospital orientation and I am about to wrap up floor orientation.

What we’ve been doing and eating

It feels nice to be somewhat settled in and writing once again! We have finally moved into San Bernardino County and managed to somewhat organize ourselves and our lives.

Once we got everything situated into where we think we would like it we also started tackling alllllll the address changes with all the people. You guys-someone needs to invent a one stop shop way of doing this! It’s crazy how many people you have to call and how many websites you must visit to change your address.

Throughout all of the craziness we did manage to workout first thing every morning just to help the endorphins start flowing and get us both in a good head space to tackle whatever the day had in store!

During this time the cooking was minimal, but we did go out and get some fruit and snacky veggies (baby carrots).

We’ve also been trying to get a lay of the land through the food that is around us so we’ve had some fails and wins-some I took pictures of and some I did not.

My hubby loved these donuts and I thought they were mediocre…

You guys are going to think I’m nuts, but since moving here I have discovered Denny’s. I’m not crazy, but I am obsessed with their veggie egg white skillet. Only, I get it with poached eggs and it is so freaking good! I wish I had gotten a better picture, but such is life when you’re post-gym hangry πŸ˜€

I also got these strawberry pancake puppies from there because again #hangry and they smelled and tasted like heaven. I could only manage to eat one, but that one was so good I ate another. I saved the rest and tried them later that night and you guys-still incredible!

Another day’s bagel-I love a good everything bagel with lox and cream cheese. This one had tomatoes, onions, and capers too!

We went to Berries for frozen yogurt. They don’t have too many flavors, but they will take whichever flavor of yogurt you pick and smash/mix in any add-ins. It’s very similar to Marble Slab or Cold Stone, but with frozen yogurt. We picked a vanilla base with strawberries and chocolate chips. Since it was frozen yogurt it got melty pretty fast, but man was it yummy!

We’ve been trying out a local cake place and so far it’s been kind of a hit and miss situation. One we loved and some others not so much…

We went to Waba for a healthier fare and enjoyed our bowls! I was so full after this because I literally inhaled it down-totally worth it!

One particular day we headed back to LA and I had “snacks” in the form of tacos from Tocaya.Β After anything savory I immediately need sweet and so we stopped at Eataly and picked up these adorable treats!

San Diego Round 2

I don’t know if you guys remember/know, but I had made a trip to sunny SD in April for a leadership conference. It’s a 3 part conference and part 2 was in June.

Hubs and I drove up there Tuesday and had some delicious eats and treats when I wasn’t at the conference.

For lunch before the conference we went to Big Thyme and ordered a reuben sandwich and salad to share. The hubs loved this salad so much that he ended up going back the next day and getting one for lunch!

Yes, that is watermelon in our salad and it was actually pretty wonderful! I’m not a big fan of fruit in my salads, but maybe I am??

Night one, some friends, the hubs, and I went to Barbusa. I was hungry and luckily were able to get seated immediately. We ordered some apps to share: arancini, cheese bread, and burrata.

Afterwards we walked around Little Italy and fell in love with the delicious smells of pizza and pasta and the sweet stores that lined the streets.

I’m guessing we must have been on an Italian food kick because for dinner the next night we went to Isola Pizza Bar. Obviously we had to get the margherita pizza, but for our apps we got the shrimp and polenta along with a roasted veggie dish that was listed under the salads.

I was intrigued by the dessert menu and while hubs got gelato I got a tiramisu…it was pretty delicious!

After a morning of conferencing the next day we drove home. It was a fun trip and even though I didn’t get too many pictures of everything seeing the ones I did take gives me the warm fuzzies πŸ™‚

I hope you all have such a great weekend! We have family coming in today for some fun celebrations this weekend and I am so looking forward to it!

Meals and Things

I thought it would be good to share some random meals I’ve taken pictures of in the last couple of weeks!

I think you guys saw this on my Sardinely Delicious post, but I really enjoyed this mish-mosh of sardines, kale, tomatoes, and crackers!

Keeping up with the fish theme I am back into lox and avocado toast-I’ve been loving it with a few slices of tomato stacked between the lox and avocado. It’s just so satisfying and delicious!

This gorgeous dinner was at Joey one late Saturday Night. We had the Korean Cauliflower, Lobster Ravioli, and Molten Chocolate Cake. It was an excellent meal!

We are loving sandwiches in this household (not anything new). This particular one was made by us for dinner one night-slices of beef, white cheddar, and a mixture of horseradish and mayo all sandwiched between two slices of sourdough.

This one was from the mall food court and featured turkey, chipotle mayo, tomato, avocado, and other goodness! The panini press crunch is everything!

We tried out a new bakery and got a few things to try! The almond cake was a bit dry, the nutella cheesecake was good, and the fruit topped parfait/cake item was delicious πŸ™‚

Life After NY

We woke up dark and early to catch a Lyft to JFK. Speaking of JFK, what a great airport! I don’t know if it was the time or day of the week that we were there or what, but it was so mellow and there was barely a line-very unLAX.

We grabbed some breakfast and headed to our gate. We could only find Dunkin’ Donuts so I got a egg white veggie sandwich and hash browns and hubs got an everything bagel and cream cheese. I don’t think he was quite ready to let go πŸ˜€ We also got a strawberry glazed donut with sprinkles to share!

We hopped on the plane and had a really lovely 5 hour trip back to LA. I really enjoyed the snack box they gave us that had Chobani vanilla yogurt, granola, apple slices and this flat blueberry muffin thing. I loved that muffin and wish I could figure out where they sold it!

We arrived in LA at 10:50am (nothing like gaining a few hours back) and had all the intentions of going to the beach, but we were exhausted! We instead went to see if we could get movie tickets to Avengers: Endgame and get Chick-fil-a to eat at the park.

We did both and were very pleased with ourselves. After we arrived at home we unpacked, threw in laundry, showered and who knows what else before heading out to Endgame.

It was a 3 hour movie and holy cow was it the movie of all movies! If you’re an Avengers fan…you’ve probably already seen it!

We went home and grabbed some TBell for babes and In n’ Out for me. We had also planned it out and grabbed cake and a cookie from Susie Cakes!

Friday morning we woke up and headed out to our first gym session since Philly. It felt good to be in the gym! I was so hungry after this session and we came up with a breakfast plan.

Yogurt with granola and honey plus a shared PB and banana sandwich!

We had reserved tickets for The Broad for when we got back from our trip and so we showered up and headed out. The Broad was incredibly cool and saw some really interesting pieces.

I guess neither of us were ready to let go of NY quite yet because we headed to Langer’s for pastrami sandwiches. We shared a sandwich which was great because each half could have been one sandwich.

This was a really great sandwich! It was meaty and vinegary from the kraut and mustard…all the good things!

Having not been to Century City in a minute we headed over to check out some stores and grab a little sweet treat from Shake Shack- their strawberry shake.

After wandering around and finding a skirt we headed off to a free comedy night at a pizza shop we had also been wanting to check out #notreadytoletgoofNY

We picked up some cake on the way home, but by the time we got home we were too exhausted to even bother. Sleep really took the cake πŸ˜‰

Saturday morning was for all the tidying up and touch ups. Since we’re moving, we’re going to be putting our house on sale so we had some decluttering to do before pictures. We spend most of the morning doing this, but before that we had to gather supplies and give ourselves some fuel.

That fuel came in the form of Pascal Patisserie. We got the breakfast burrito (my fave) and the carne asada sandwich (B’s fave). When we got home we had some cake! We finished up our tasks and cleaned up for yet another comedy show…we have a problem…

We were planning on going out for dinner, but neither of us were feeling like it so we picked up some Panang curry from Jasmine Thai. We had our second piece of cake after and called it a night!

Sunday was our last vacay day and we made the most of it by finishing up our stuff and going grocery shopping πŸ˜€ We also skipped the gym this morning and got breakfast from Pascal. We got a bagel (there’s that NY thing popping up again) and an omelet sandwich.

We also picked up a pistachio croissant and an almond chocolate croissant. We split the pistachio one and saved the almond chocolate.

We went home after this and prepped for the week and finished tidying up. I started getting hungry later into the evening and so we figured we’d better grab dinner.

Which brings me to another thing we did again was pick upΒ Thai food from another place called Box Thai.

We got dumplings, chicken satay, and an order of pad kee mao. It was SO good! We will definitely be back here for more Thai!

We ate the almond chocolate croissant for dessert and chilled out for the rest of the night! That concludes our vacation-definitely had some vacation blues, but we were both ready to get back to some normal eating!

Loving

Welcome back friends! Today I have for you another favorites post, but this one is a little longer than usual so bear with me. Since it is a bit longer I am just going to jump right in to it!

The first fave are the Guittard chocolate wafers for baking. I’ve had quite a few chocolate chips in my life and these are the best I’ve ever had! They are smooth and creamy-I loved Β them in my chocolate chip cookies and I bet they would be great in banana bread or pancakes! They are a pricy, but for the occasional switch up I think they are worth it!

When my Alaffia face cream I had used for so many years got discontinued I had to find another face cream. I did a LOT of research and did not want to spend an arm and a leg, but I also didn’t want to cause any issues to my skin. After all the research I realized the only way to know if something was going to work for me was to take the leap and try it out on my own skin.

That being said, I wanted to stack the deck in my favor and I knew Kiehl’s is a brand that had been around for a LONG time. They do skin care well so I decided to get the Ultra Facial Cream with SPF 30. I thought this would be perfect since I am terrible at putting on sunscreen. This eliminates a whole step for me since the SPF is built right in! I absolutely have been loving this moisturizer. The SPF doesn’t leave my skin tone looking grey and ghastly, but sinks right in and leaves a nice little glow. I am so happy that I found this and I don’t know if I’ll ever go to anything else!

I normally don’t talk about shows I’m watching on here, but I have been seriously obsessed with Queer Eye on Netflix. I could binge on this show for hours! I laugh, I cry-it’s a whole mood. I love the positive message this show sends and at the end of the day it’s a feel good series. Side note: I love all 5 of the Fab Five, but I think Jonathan Van Ness is my spirit animal!

Speaking of QE, I found the recipe for this Green Goddess dip on the show and we are beyond obsessed with it. It’s so easy, healthy, and delicious! It’s a great dip, dressing, eat it by the spoonful type things and you best believe I am doing all of the above πŸ˜€ One thing, we don’t add olive oil to ours simply because we like the consistency the Greek yogurt and avocado create. It is more dip-like, but that’s okay with us.

Another item I was on the hunt for was a new face oil and I found this one from Herbivore. It’s their Orchid Youth-Preserving Facial Oil and I could write an ode about how much I love it. I’m not sure what it’s doing to preserve by youth (haven’t used it for long enough), but it is hydrating, leaves a gorgeous glow, and the floral scent in this is everything. If you’re sensitive to scents it does dissipate quickly, but I would go into Sephora and smell it to be safe!

Spring has sprung and summer is almost here and in preparation for warmer months I have been on the hunt for fun summer nail colors. I found this one at TJ Maxx and have been reaching for it every time I decide to paint my nails. The color is coral carousel by Essie. It’s a coral-y peachy pinky shade and I thought it was too pretty to not talk about!

One of our favorite things to do is go to comedy shows-it can be stand up, improv, a play whatever, but we love to laugh. We find them and go often, but I never really thought about mentioning it until now. The tickets are usually not super expensive and it also gets us out and exploring another part of town we may not have gone to otherwise. It’s something I recommend for a fun and different date night or going out with friends!
