San Diego Round 2

I don’t know if you guys remember/know, but I had made a trip to sunny SD in April for a leadership conference. It’s a 3 part conference and part 2 was in June.

Hubs and I drove up there Tuesday and had some delicious eats and treats when I wasn’t at the conference.

For lunch before the conference we went to Big Thyme and ordered a reuben sandwich and salad to share. The hubs loved this salad so much that he ended up going back the next day and getting one for lunch!

Yes, that is watermelon in our salad and it was actually pretty wonderful! I’m not a big fan of fruit in my salads, but maybe I am??

Night one, some friends, the hubs, and I went to Barbusa. I was hungry and luckily were able to get seated immediately. We ordered some apps to share: arancini, cheese bread, and burrata.

Afterwards we walked around Little Italy and fell in love with the delicious smells of pizza and pasta and the sweet stores that lined the streets.

I’m guessing we must have been on an Italian food kick because for dinner the next night we went to Isola Pizza Bar. Obviously we had to get the margherita pizza, but for our apps we got the shrimp and polenta along with a roasted veggie dish that was listed under the salads.

I was intrigued by the dessert menu and while hubs got gelato I got a tiramisu…it was pretty delicious!

After a morning of conferencing the next day we drove home. It was a fun trip and even though I didn’t get too many pictures of everything seeing the ones I did take gives me the warm fuzzies πŸ™‚

I hope you all have such a great weekend! We have family coming in today for some fun celebrations this weekend and I am so looking forward to it!

Meals and Things

I thought it would be good to share some random meals I’ve taken pictures of in the last couple of weeks!

I think you guys saw this on my Sardinely Delicious post, but I really enjoyed this mish-mosh of sardines, kale, tomatoes, and crackers!

Keeping up with the fish theme I am back into lox and avocado toast-I’ve been loving it with a few slices of tomato stacked between the lox and avocado. It’s just so satisfying and delicious!

This gorgeous dinner was at Joey one late Saturday Night. We had the Korean Cauliflower, Lobster Ravioli, and Molten Chocolate Cake. It was an excellent meal!

We are loving sandwiches in this household (not anything new). This particular one was made by us for dinner one night-slices of beef, white cheddar, and a mixture of horseradish and mayo all sandwiched between two slices of sourdough.

This one was from the mall food court and featured turkey, chipotle mayo, tomato, avocado, and other goodness! The panini press crunch is everything!

We tried out a new bakery and got a few things to try! The almond cake was a bit dry, the nutella cheesecake was good, and the fruit topped parfait/cake item was delicious πŸ™‚

Life After NY

We woke up dark and early to catch a Lyft to JFK. Speaking of JFK, what a great airport! I don’t know if it was the time or day of the week that we were there or what, but it was so mellow and there was barely a line-very unLAX.

We grabbed some breakfast and headed to our gate. We could only find Dunkin’ Donuts so I got a egg white veggie sandwich and hash browns and hubs got an everything bagel and cream cheese. I don’t think he was quite ready to let go πŸ˜€ We also got a strawberry glazed donut with sprinkles to share!

We hopped on the plane and had a really lovely 5 hour trip back to LA. I really enjoyed the snack box they gave us that had Chobani vanilla yogurt, granola, apple slices and this flat blueberry muffin thing. I loved that muffin and wish I could figure out where they sold it!

We arrived in LA at 10:50am (nothing like gaining a few hours back) and had all the intentions of going to the beach, but we were exhausted! We instead went to see if we could get movie tickets to Avengers: Endgame and get Chick-fil-a to eat at the park.

We did both and were very pleased with ourselves. After we arrived at home we unpacked, threw in laundry, showered and who knows what else before heading out to Endgame.

It was a 3 hour movie and holy cow was it the movie of all movies! If you’re an Avengers fan…you’ve probably already seen it!

We went home and grabbed some TBell for babes and In n’ Out for me. We had also planned it out and grabbed cake and a cookie from Susie Cakes!

Friday morning we woke up and headed out to our first gym session since Philly. It felt good to be in the gym! I was so hungry after this session and we came up with a breakfast plan.

Yogurt with granola and honey plus a shared PB and banana sandwich!

We had reserved tickets for The Broad for when we got back from our trip and so we showered up and headed out. The Broad was incredibly cool and saw some really interesting pieces.

I guess neither of us were ready to let go of NY quite yet because we headed to Langer’s for pastrami sandwiches. We shared a sandwich which was great because each half could have been one sandwich.

This was a really great sandwich! It was meaty and vinegary from the kraut and mustard…all the good things!

Having not been to Century City in a minute we headed over to check out some stores and grab a little sweet treat from Shake Shack- their strawberry shake.

After wandering around and finding a skirt we headed off to a free comedy night at a pizza shop we had also been wanting to check out #notreadytoletgoofNY

We shared a pie and enjoyed some comedy! Can you tell how much we really enjoy comedy?

We picked up some cake on the way home, but by the time we got home we were too exhausted to even bother. Sleep really took the cake πŸ˜‰

Saturday morning was for all the tidying up and touch ups. Since we’re moving, we’re going to be putting our house on sale so we had some decluttering to do before pictures. We spend most of the morning doing this, but before that we had to gather supplies and give ourselves some fuel.

That fuel came in the form of Pascal Patisserie. We got the breakfast burrito (my fave) and the carne asada sandwich (B’s fave). When we got home we had some cake! We finished up our tasks and cleaned up for yet another comedy show…we have a problem…

We were planning on going out for dinner, but neither of us were feeling like it so we picked up some Panang curry from Jasmine Thai. We had our second piece of cake after and called it a night!

Sunday was our last vacay day and we made the most of it by finishing up our stuff and going grocery shopping πŸ˜€ We also skipped the gym this morning and got breakfast from Pascal. We got a bagel (there’s that NY thing popping up again) and an omelet sandwich.

We also picked up a pistachio croissant and an almond chocolate croissant. We split the pistachio one and saved the almond chocolate.

We went home after this and prepped for the week and finished tidying up. I started getting hungry later into the evening and so we figured we’d better grab dinner.

Which brings me to another thing we did again was pick upΒ Thai food from another place called Box Thai.

We got dumplings, chicken satay, and an order of pad kee mao. It was SO good! We will definitely be back here for more Thai!

We ate the almond chocolate croissant for dessert and chilled out for the rest of the night! That concludes our vacation-definitely had some vacation blues, but we were both ready to get back to some normal eating!

Loving

Welcome back friends! Today I have for you another favorites post, but this one is a little longer than usual so bear with me. Since it is a bit longer I am just going to jump right in to it!

The first fave are the Guittard chocolate wafers for baking. I’ve had quite a few chocolate chips in my life and these are the best I’ve ever had! They are smooth and creamy-I loved Β them in my chocolate chip cookies and I bet they would be great in banana bread or pancakes! They are a pricy, but for the occasional switch up I think they are worth it!

When my Alaffia face cream I had used for so many years got discontinued I had to find another face cream. I did a LOT of research and did not want to spend an arm and a leg, but I also didn’t want to cause any issues to my skin. After all the research I realized the only way to know if something was going to work for me was to take the leap and try it out on my own skin.

That being said, I wanted to stack the deck in my favor and I knew Kiehl’s is a brand that had been around for a LONG time. They do skin care well so I decided to get the Ultra Facial Cream with SPF 30. I thought this would be perfect since I am terrible at putting on sunscreen. This eliminates a whole step for me since the SPF is built right in! I absolutely have been loving this moisturizer. The SPF doesn’t leave my skin tone looking grey and ghastly, but sinks right in and leaves a nice little glow. I am so happy that I found this and I don’t know if I’ll ever go to anything else!

I normally don’t talk about shows I’m watching on here, but I have been seriously obsessed with Queer Eye on Netflix. I could binge on this show for hours! I laugh, I cry-it’s a whole mood. I love the positive message this show sends and at the end of the day it’s a feel good series. Side note: I love all 5 of the Fab Five, but I think Jonathan Van Ness is my spirit animal!

Speaking of QE, I found the recipe for this Green Goddess dip on the show and we are beyond obsessed with it. It’s so easy, healthy, and delicious! It’s a great dip, dressing, eat it by the spoonful type things and you best believe I am doing all of the above πŸ˜€ One thing, we don’t add olive oil to ours simply because we like the consistency the Greek yogurt and avocado create. It is more dip-like, but that’s okay with us.

Another item I was on the hunt for was a new face oil and I found this one from Herbivore. It’s their Orchid Youth-Preserving Facial Oil and I could write an ode about how much I love it. I’m not sure what it’s doing to preserve by youth (haven’t used it for long enough), but it is hydrating, leaves a gorgeous glow, and the floral scent in this is everything. If you’re sensitive to scents it does dissipate quickly, but I would go into Sephora and smell it to be safe!

Spring has sprung and summer is almost here and in preparation for warmer months I have been on the hunt for fun summer nail colors. I found this one at TJ Maxx and have been reaching for it every time I decide to paint my nails. The color is coral carousel by Essie. It’s a coral-y peachy pinky shade and I thought it was too pretty to not talk about!

One of our favorite things to do is go to comedy shows-it can be stand up, improv, a play whatever, but we love to laugh. We find them and go often, but I never really thought about mentioning it until now. The tickets are usually not super expensive and it also gets us out and exploring another part of town we may not have gone to otherwise. It’s something I recommend for a fun and different date night or going out with friends!

Roasted Veggies and Cookies

I feel like this title pretty much sums up my life-I love veggies and I love cookies and in order to be a fully functioning me I need both.

We just can’t seem to get enough of roasted veggies. Spring has sprung, but cooler evening temps has me still wanting warm foods so instead of having a salad or steaming my vegetables we’ve been roasting them into golden brown (slightly charred…okay a lot charred) perfection!

Burgers and fries? Nahhhh roasted carrots, broccoli, and brussels will do just fine πŸ™‚

Leaving the nutriently dense part of this post and entering cookie land now πŸ™‚ Hubs heard about how good these Dunkers from Trader Joe’s were. I spotted them while getting groceries the other day and impulsively added them to the cart.

I’m not a crispy cookie person, but there’s something oddly enjoyable about these for me. I think I may prefer the mini chocolate chip Nantucket cookies from Pepperidge Farm over these, but I can’t say I regret buying these. I will be attempting to finish the package…not all at once!

Now for a cookie type I do enjoy-chewy, melty, and filled with chocolate chips.

We made this recipe and used these incredible Guittard baking wafers. These are some expensive chocolate chips, but we tried a few while baking and LORDYY were they the best chocolate “chips” I’ve ever had.

They are not chocolate chip shaped instead they are rounder and flatter. They do great at layering that chocolatey goodness into your cookie.

These cookies turned out incredible! We still have cookie dough in the fridge and it’s killing me to not pick up a spoon and just dig in to it.

birthday week

Hello all!

Thanks for stopping by for another post! Last week was my birthday and it was a fun week with treats and sweets and lots of love ❀️

Hubs got me some gorgeous flowers and my perfect card…I mean c’mon!

And then I got more flowers from my in-laws. It was so sweet! I love me some flowers and it’s been so great having these beautiful pops of color everywhere in the house.

I had to go in for a meeting at work my co-workers Β did a sweet potluck and got me this beautiful and delicious chocolate cake!

I started my Friday off like any other with a workout, cleanup, and shower. I had a slice of bread with some PB for breakfast.

I kept things pretty chill during the day and when B got home from work we ventured out to do a few errands and grab some dinner. We decided on Poquito Mas-he got a burrito and I got tacos.

We also had some cookies for dessert…more to come on this later πŸ˜‰

Saturday morning was met with a workout and Chick-fil-a breakfast. We showered quickly to headed out to a painting class. This is B’s painting…he always does such a great job at these things!

After class we went to find some late lunch. Our initial idea was to head to Fiore for sandwiches, but they were out of bread. I was devastated, but pulled it together to find Monte 52!

We ordered a Red Dragon which we added turkey. It was so yummy with tomato, avocado, red onion, lettuce and lots of mustard and red dragon cheese. I had never heard of it, but it’s cheese with mustard and it definitely brought a punch!

The other sandwich was a roast beef with horseradish aioli, cheddar cheese, and fried onions. This one had a nice spicy kick, but not too spicy. It was so yummy!

We headed closer to home and wandered around the mall thinking about our evening plans. We decided to head to a Redbox and finally rent Instant Family. It was such a cute movie-funny and emotional all at the same time.

After such a late lunch it was around 9pm when we decided to head out to dinner. Il Fornaio seemed like a great option. It was close by and open and I had never been!

Upon being seated we immediately were served warm bread with olive oil and balsamic vinegar. The bread was fluffy on the inside and crusty on the outside. Bread. Heaven.

We spotted the Antipasto Di Pesce which was seared ahi tuna, spicy grilled calamari, scallops and shrimp. My favorite was the spicy grilled calamari, but honestly everything on this plate was delicious! It was well cooked and so flavorful!

For our main we split a dish off their seasonal menu, Trenette all Riminese. It was housemade spinach and egg pasta with shrimp, scallops, crab, tomatoes, shallots, and arugula. I’m usually a tomato based pasta girl, but this was delicious!

Our sweet server brought us a tiramisu for dessert on her! This is hands down one of the best tiramisu I have ever had. It was light and creamy and oh so dreamy!

Sunday morning we woke up and I decided against the gym and instead we “hiked” through a hilly neighborhood. A few up and down hills later we found a couple of more sandwiches to eat at The Carving Board.

We had their turkey dinner sandwich. This was a take on a left over Thanksgiving sandwich with stuffing, turkey, gravy, and cranberries. I really enjoyed this and the whole time I was eating it I kept thinking about FRIENDS and that scene with Ross and his turkey sandwich with the moistmaker. Anybody else?

Surprising for us our other sandwich was also turkey based. It was a cold sandwich with onions, cucumbers, tomatoes, and mayo. This also had cranberries. It was fresh and crunchy and had all the ingredients to a good sandwich!

We had some grocery shopping to do, but we needed something sweet. From the sandwich shop we walked to Whole Foods and on our way their we spotted Uba Tuba. We had never tried it so we got the super mini dessert portion of their acai bowl. It was the perfect little sweet treat.

 

We could pick two toppings so hubby got strawbs and nanas. I got bananas and sweet and condensed milk. It came with honey as well! It was light and refreshing and I could totally go for another one right now…

While at WF we spotted these individual yogurt bars. If it looks familiar it’s because we’ve been getting the strawberry and vanilla version of these from Costco. I quite badly wanted to try the hazelnut flavor so we did πŸ™‚

After roaming around WF and finishing up groceries at Trader Joes we came home and unloaded our goods. We went for another walk and it started raining!

Thankfully it was a short walk and we had thought ahead to wearing hooded jackets so it was okay. We did some Yelping to figure out what we should have for dinner and decided we needed to check out Johnny Pacific again.

We ordered 4 empanadas-2 chicken al pastor and 2 beef tingas and got the chicken skewers which came with rice and salad.

The beef tingas were our favorite out of the 2 and we really loved the whole meal. The flavors were really great and we will definitely be going back!

V-Day Weekending

As much as I would have LOVED to get this post out on Monday life and work tend to get in the way of well intentioned plans soooo….here we are on Thursday talking about what the hubs and I got up to this past weekend!

I got a serious hankering for BJ’s buffalo chicken pizza on Friday so when B got home we compromised and got half buffalo chicken and half bbq chicken-we DEVOURED this pizza!

Knowing how much I obsessed I am with food and how much I love dessert B had ordered some cookies for us from PDX Cookie Co. He ordered their variety pack which arrived just in time for our V-Day weekend! I am not kidding when I tell you these cookies were seriously packed with all the goodies and were super delicious…also, super incredible warmed up!

Pizza and cookies=great start to any weekend? Amiright?

Saturday we woke up, had coffee, and headed to the gym! Post workout we had plans to head over to the mall and finally combine our phone plans to one carrier (we’ve been married for almost 3 years now-it was time). This is a task I had been dreading, but it went so smoothly that I kept talking about how easy and wonderful the process was.

After all this excitement we went home and I ate the lonely slice of BBQ chicken pizza that was left from Friday night πŸ™‚

The rest of the day was spend running errands, perusing through our favorite mall and figuring out what we should do for dinner. We had very well intentioned plans to have dinner at a Brazilian Steakhouse. I had made reservations in advance and we were really excited about the whole thing until we got to the day of the reservation. Suddenly, we wanted everything but steak…anybody else have this dilemma?

We went back and forth on a few options until deciding on Rosie’s BBQ. We ordered a beef rib each, their Nashville hot chicken sandwich, and a side of their baked fries. Sadly I got pictures of none of our dinner on Saturday night so I am very sorry about that 😦

Their was nothing Nashville hot about this chicken sandwich. It was a pretty sad chicken sandwich at that. It was this super thin chicken patty that had absolutely no spice. I turned to hubby and wondered if they had messed up our order…who knows?

The beef ribs were yummy per usual and the fries were the star of the show. They were fat wedge type fries which I normally do not like, but these were crispy on the outside and fluffy on the inside. They were seasoned so perfectly! LOVED these fries!

We had more cookies for dessert πŸ™‚

We woke up Sunday morning and did some grocery shopping for the week. We then took a brisk walk around our neighborhood since we were not planning on heading to the gym. Snacked a bit before heading out to a super late lunch/very early dinner situation with our friends.

Before meeting up with the friends we explored Olvera Street and Union Station. It was super cool to check out the vendors at Olvera Street. The sights and smells were incredible and overwhelming. I didn’t know where to look!

We made one last quick stop at Fugetsu Do for a couple of pieces of mochi. If you haven’t been here or tried their sweet creations you absolutely need to. Their mochi is so soft and incredible. We got a red bean and a blueberry Β mochi for dessert!

I had been wanting to check out Bun Shop for a minute and figured this would be a good excuse to try out their baos. I had a spicy chicken bao and a beef bao. Hubs had the same and we shared some of their Yoshi fries.

I definitely preferred the beef bao. It had a fried onion on top of it which added a nice crunchy texture to the soft meaty bun. I do wish the buns themselves held together a bit better-they were both split on the bottom which made it a little difficult to eat. The fries were really yummy with the addition of the furikake seasoning!

After spending a good amount of time catching up we all went our separate ways, but before the hubs and I went home we made one last stop at 85 Degrees. I think we both were craving the milk buns, but got a couple of other treats too πŸ™‚

We made it home with time to watch some Netflix before bed! It wasn’t the most traditional V-Day weekend, but as long as we are spending time together we are pretty happy! I hope you all had a lovely V-Day weekend!!

Mini LA Food Crawl

We had been meaning to go around the city and try out some pizza places so we ended up doing just that along with a couple of pit stops for a fish taco and another for pies πŸ˜€

This is maybe more of a mini food crawl, but it was still tasty and fun! At each of these places except the pie place we shared one item so we weren’t super stuffed and sick.

Our first stop was Mulberry Street Pizzeria.

The pizza was SUPER thin, but maintained it’s crispiness. I did some serious damage to my mouth because it was SUPER hot, but it was so worth it.

Ricky’s Tacos was another place we had heard so much about.Β They are known for their fish tacos. The truck lists their many taco accolades including being one of the top fish tacos in the nation!

The fish in this taco was light and had a really great crunch from the batter, the cabbage added some much needed freshness to the fried fish. The tortilla did a great job of holding everything together. We topped it with the spicy salsa and their special mix of mayo and mustard and it was simply delicious!

This place had the most interesting pies and the great thing is they have vegan pizza with vegan cheese and “meat.” Since we were comparing pizzas we had to get a slice of cheese. They were kind and split it for us.

There was a lot more cheese on this slice and the crust was thicker. It was a good slice of pizza, but not my favorite compared to other spots!

We walked to our next and final place-The Pie Hole. Pie Hole has sweet and savory pies to please the whole crowd. We got two of their more popular pies-The Earl Grey and the Cereal Pie.

The Earl Grey was very light and smooth. I tasted more chocolate then tea. The filling was nice and fluffy, but contrasted with pistachios sprinkled throughout.

The Cereal Pie was denser. The filling was similar to cheesecake in texture and had fruity pebbles mixed in. It was topped with a few different cereals you may remember from your childhood (or last night) like Fruit Loops and Lucky Charms.

They were both very different and very delicious!

The two places we would go back to are probably Mulberry Street and Pie Hole! It’s not that Pizzanista and Ricky’s didn’t taste yummy and in fact I recommend you try all four of these places if you get the chance!

Staycation

The hubs and I had a week off together and instead of flying out somewhere like we normally do we decided to stick around home and discover some places, food, things that we had not yet explored in LA.

The night (Tuesday night) we made our steak dinner from Sun Basket we went to a comedy show. We love comedy and there’s plenty of it in LA. We love the Comedy Store, but are definitely going to be trying some other spots.

While there we indulged in this soft pretzel with mustard and since we had an early dinner so we could make it to the show we had hot slices of pizza from Vitos afterwards πŸ™‚

On Wednesday we woke up and worked out at the gym. We had some errands to run which included grabbing bagels and printing our tickets for Universal. We did all of that and made it home, showered, and headed out.

Once we arrived at City Walk I knew I wanted to try Voodoo Donuts. We got their mango jam filled donut with tang dusted on top! B loved it and I thought it was okay-the Tang made it super tart.

We arrived at Universal around 2pm and stayed till they closed that night at 6pm. Rides now vs rides when you were a kid are totally different. I was definitely nauseated after a couple…they were still fun πŸ™‚

Of course when we went to Harry Potter world we had to get some butter beer. We got the frozen version and boy was it sweet and delicious!

I couldn’t believe how realistic they make it all seem and how cool the effects are! I did do a photoshoot with this snowman. Shout out to hubs for always indulging my ridiculousness!

After a full day of being active and being cold we decided to go for some warm comfort food at home. We got takeout Thai from our favorite Thai Blvd Bistro and brought it home. We stuck with our classic favorites-Pad Thai and Panang curry.

Before stopping for Thai food we had made a stop to grab dessert at Porto’s. We love this place and it’s so inexpensive!

Thursday we worked out and found a nice little area to walk. We ended up walking to a lunch spot, Blue Table, we had been to once before and split a turkey sandwich and a steak sandwich.

The steak was the favorite!

We walked from there to a frozen yogurt shop and ended up walking around with our frozen treats. We eventually walked back to our car and drove home.

During this time the hubs had been working on making some sourdough. He created starter and he made us a couple of loaves during the break. You guys, sourdough bread warm out of the oven with butter? It is everything!

On Friday we did a hike and went to brunch at our favorite Leo and Lily’s. I got a turkey club and he got a Buffalo chicken sandwich. We split them and they both ended up being just okay! I don’t know if you can tell, but we really love our sandwiches πŸ™‚

I think I will leave it off here because Saturday deserves it’s own post. We did a little food crawl around LA and it was super tasty πŸ˜‰
