Fish 101

I wasn’t sure about writing this post because to be completely honest I did not have a meal at Fish 101. I was pretty full from brunch, but I am always down for a foodie adventure! This place has 4.5 stars and 902 reviews on Yelp…I needed to go.

IMG-20181031-WA0006

We went with a large group of friends and there was a good variety of options to choose from. They had everything from poke (which hubby got) to fish and chips (which a couple of our friends got.

The poke I had a couple of bites of and it was really delicious and flavorful. I liked that the fish tasted fresh and that the sauce on top let the fish shine through.

IMG-20181031-WA0005

Our friends that got fish and chips seemed to really enjoy it and thought it nice and flaky. Other friends got shrimp tacos which looked crunchy and fresh. One friend got the burrito and man was it massive! She shared it with her hubby and she was still full.

If we every go back I will for sure save some room for this place, but it was too good of a spot to not tell you about. I totally loved the rustic vibes in there and it was filled with people!

Let me know if you have been here and what you thought!

PSA: Potatoes Do Not Kill

I think the title is pretty self explanatory, but the reason I am bringing up my love for spuds is because I feel like they have such a bad rep.

20180522_104226

Listen, potatoes are not all bad. They are a good source of potassium which can help in regulating BP. If you’re eating them as fries maybe not so much, but a few fries here and there never hurt anybody either.

I preach and try to live moderation the best I can and I don’t believe in good or bad foods. I feel like there’s a cycle for all foods-one day it’s healthy and in 10 years from now it’ll be the worst possible thing for you according to some study.

I love potatoes and they help add some bulk to my breakfasts and help with satiety, but they also just make me happy. I don’t eat a huge pan of them, but having some thrown into a taco makes me smile.

Have a baked potato, eat a few fries…I promise they aren’t out to get ya!

ABJ Greek Yogurt

It’s been hot here in beautiful LA, but on one particular hot day a hot breakfast did not sound appetizing.

I dreamed this up while at the gym and made it a reality once I got home. It was seriously one of the best bowls of yogurt I have ever had.

20180602_120916

I used plain fat free Greek yogurt because that’s what I had, TJ’s almond butter, and TJ’s blueberry preserves, with some Sprout’s bulk bin granola (chocolate hazelnut flavor) to make this.

It had good protein from the yogurt and AB, the preserves and granola gave me some carbs to pep me up post workout, and the AB and granola had some fat to help satiate and leave me full and satisfied!

I was a little weary about putting nut butter in yogurt. I don’t know why, but it never sounded like a good idea until this day. I guess hunger fuels delicious creations 😉

Is it hot where you live? Have you been changing up your meal routines?! Let me know in the comments!

Hole Foods

I thought it would be fun to share snaps from this weekend of eating! If you’re about that clean eating life donut worry because we ate so many colors 😅

Morning coffee in this adorable new Target mug

Workout and breakfast at the gym! This breakfast burrito had scrambled eggs, turkey bacon, cheddar cheese, and potatoes. So, so good.

20180421_091800

After showers we headed out to Colorado Donuts and indulged in these babies:

20180421_123716

Later on we split some tacos from our favorite vegan joint-Organix. It was so good I 🍩 have the words to 🌮 about it!

20180421_160048

I ended up having some unpictured T-Bell and we shared some macarons and ‘buch for dessert #health

We did some grocery shopping Sunday and found these delicious honey mangos at Sprout’s and bought some. They were so sweet and yummy!

20180422_121543

We ended up going to the Grove and I had my first beignet…

This beautiful, doughy, pillowy glazed creation 😍

And some treats from Dominque Ansel bakery. We got the DKA which is a flaky, caramelized croissant creation. The green and white thing is this matcha and passion fruit mousse thing which was amazing in all it’s flavors and textures. They were passing out madeleines to sample so we had one of those too!

20180422_162215

Donut judge 😂, but we kept the hole food eating going by swinging through California Donuts

20180422_171302

We ended up holding on to the donuts until after dinner…we had Vito’s pizza which was incredible as always!

Hiking for Bondi Harvest

Okay we didn’t actualllyyy hike for Bondi Harvest, but we did eat at Bondi after a nice long, exhausting hike.

But first, we fueled up at Starbucks with their egg white and spinach wraps-they are so good, but boy do they stay hot like a hot pocket!

IMG-20180401-WA0005

We decided to hike the Los Liones Canyon Trailhead and it was so gorgeous. You go uphill the whole hike, but the gorgeous views made all that legwork worth it. Besides that you get rewarded with a nice downhill stroll when you are heading back to the car 😉

20180324_101245

Post-hike we wanted something wholesome and nourishing-Bondi seemed like a good choice. Hubs got the Bondi Breakfast, I got the Whirley’s Bowl, and we shared the Papaya Fruit Bowl.

The Bondi Breakfast-simple, healthy, delicious and that bread was hella’ hardy.

IMG-20180401-WA0034

Whirley’s Bowl-Pretty large piece of tilapia with cauliflower rice, avocado, yogurt tartar, slaw and salsa.

20180324_124149

The Papaya Fruit Bowl though was my absolute favorite part of the meal. This was a sweet papaya filled with coconut vanilla chia seed pudding, a scoop of acai, berries and mint.

It was so sweet and refreshing and light-such a great way to end our meal! Ever since we had this I have been wanting to go back and eat like 3 of them. So, so good!

Smorgasburg Pop-Up

This post is SUPER late, but I really had so much fun that I had to share. You guys know how much I love Smorgasburg! It’s always such a fun way to find some good local eats. So when the hubs said they were having a pop-up in Santa Monica I was all about it.

IMG-20180401-WA0001

Wet hair courtesy of the rain 🙂

Similar to our first Smorgasburg experience it was POURING rain, but we braved the downpour and were rewarded with lots of fried chicken and some yummy churros!

IMG-20180401-WA0016

Our first stop was BaoHaus where we got a Spiceland and a BirdHaus-messy, delicious and would DEF get again!

IMG-20180401-WA0018

Next we kept the theme going by stopping for fried chicken sliders from Daddy’s Chicken Shack. I mean c’mon how adorable are these little guys…

IMG-20180401-WA0007

These were tiny, but the sliders come 3 to an order

Our last stop as it is a lot of times was Churro Boss, but we realized they were cash only and it hit us that we had no cash on us. Friends, we hummed and hawed but we ended up trekking back to the car in the rain to get cash and walk right back.

IMG-20180401-WA0006

If that doesn’t say anything about how good these guys are then I don’t know what will. We got our usual with sweet and condensed milk and it was absolutely worth the rainy walk!

If you live in LA and haven’t checked out Smorgasburg I HIGHLY recommend it. It’s just a lot of fun and there are a lot of great people selling a lot of great food!

If you have been let me know who your favorite vendors are!

Oh the food we will eat…Great White

After a full day of working out and then doing some indoor rock climbing (my first time, hubs second) we were exhausted and in need of serious nourishment!

We were having trouble deciding where to go and what to eat, but finally decided on Great White. I can’t even tell you how glad I am we decided on this.

First of all the space is gorgeous and secondly the doors open up completely to let in all the sunshine. It’s really well done with a seamless indoor/outdoor eating area. It was already packed by the time we got there, but we were able to snag a table for two pretty easily!

We were too tired to think and ended up going with a breakfast burrito (it’s called Breakfast Burrito on the menu) and Crispy Chicken Sandwich.

20180224_154118

Hubby fell in LOVE with this breakfast burrito-the softly scrambled eggs is what did it I think 🙂 He even went as far to say that this was “the best breakfast burrito I ever had.”

The chicken sandwich was pretty spectacular as well! I really loved the use of dill in this sandwich and the side of fries were crispy and perfect.

20180224_154109

We really loved this place (the hubs was a BIG fan) and we will be going back to check out more of the menu (or if you’re hubby-get the breakfast burrito again)!

Have you been to Great White? What have you tried on the menu??

Urban Plates

Urban Plates is a lovely restaurant that serves real food, made fresh. It has a cafeteria style feel with the trays and lines. You’ve got lots of good options with salads, sandwiches, plates. If you go with a plate option you get to walk through and watch while your plate is made (again, like a cafeteria).

It can be as healthy (or not healthy) as you would like! They have some fun and interesting options (glass noodles and shiitake salad) for sides as well as the classics (mashed potatoes). The food is delicious and flavorful and has never disappointed.

I am a huge fan of their salmon-the spicy mustard sauce packs a nice punch! The brussels sprouts with turkey bacon and mashed potatoes were my sides of choice. Both were delicious and well made. You always get a nice slice of grilled bread on the side which is a nice touch!

IMG-20180214-WA0006

The hubs got the steak with chimichurri sauce and it was cooked to a perfect medium rare. He got the mozz and tomato salad plus the sesame broccolini (our fave)! I love broccoli, but I may love broccolini a little (way, way) more 😉

IMG-20180214-WA0001

They also have a display of desserts at the end of the line that look absolutely irresistible! We did manage to resist and got frozen yogurt instead, but I guarantee that we will be trying out dessert next time!

Sweet Endings

The weekend is here and I really wanted to end on a sweet note 🙂 I decided to do a picture ode from a recent visit to Paderia Bakery.

We got more than our fair share of sweet treats, but we restrained ourselves from buying the entire bakery display of goodies (pat on the back for us)!

They have cookies, cheesecakes, and malasadas of all different flavors…

I hope you enjoyed this picturesque ode to Paderia and have a weekend as sweet as these treats 😉

Oh the food we will eat…Howlin’ Ray’s

If you haven’t heard about Howlin’ Ray’s it’s a hot chicken spot that is extremely popular. I feel like there is/has been a hot chicken craze sweeping California and Howlin’ Ray’s is supposed to be one of the best.

IMG-20171113-WA0032

After having visited Howlin’ Ray’s I will say that you should go because, if nothing else, it is an experience.

Let’s start from the beginning where you will come and experience a nice long line. Bring  good friends and family to wait with you so you can catch up during this time. If you can’t find anyone to wait in line with you for 1-3 hours then bring a good book or make sure your phone is charged 🙂

IMG-20171113-WA0033

Our wait was about an hour and a half and after reading some Yelp reviews I think we were lucky. There have been people that wait 3 plus hours! They close at 4, but the good news is that they will continue to serve anybody that is in line. That’s pretty amazing customer service!

The good service continues as you step into the restaurant. It’s small, but it’s bustling. Every worker is smiling and high fiving anyone and everyone and none of it impedes with how quickly they are crankin’ out that fried chicken. It’s a beautiful thing to behold after waiting an hour and a half.

IMG-20171113-WA0040

We ordered the quarter chicken (mild heat) and also a hot chicken sando (moderate heat). There is a scale varying from country to howlin’ heat so you pick the spice level you want so no worries about burning your mouth or not having enough heat…they have you covered!

IMG-20171113-WA0035

The sandwich was our fave, but the chicken was crispy, juicy, and tender. The level of heat was perfect for both!

IMG-20171113-WA0041

We really enjoyed our experience-the chicken and service were above and beyond-but the line kills me. Don’t get me wrong I am glad that we had a chance to experience Howlin’ Ray’s and if you can go I highly recommend it because as I said it is quite the experience!

Have you tried Howlin’ Ray’s?
