Sushi Date Night

It’s been a minute since we’ve had a proper date night so we decided that we were long overdue! We picked Maru Sushi Bar simply because they had 4.5 stars and great reviews on Yelp.

We ordered a few of their different specialty rolls and enjoyed all of them! The only one I was a little iffy on was the roll topped with eel and avocado, but even that was good. I enjoy spicier, more savory flavors and tend not to like sweeter teriyaki type sauces so that may have something to do with it.

This Oh! Baby Roll was our favorite roll of the night I think. It was different and I loved that it was spicy crab and scallop mix, avocado, and sprouts wrapped in a piece of tuna. Craving this all over again!

The quality of the fish could be noticed in the sashimi we ordered. The tuna with the roasted brussels sprout was surprising and odd. I believe the other was yellowtail with jalapeño and cilantro. The yellowtail was my favorite out of the two.

We also got a tuna rice cake which is unpictured, but we both LOVED. The crispy texture of the rice really did a great job contrasting with the avocado and spicy tuna.

We will definitely be going back at some point to try out more of their rolls!

I had made brownies and added in some Reese’s PB cups for dessert. I had thought ahead and bought vanilla ice-cream to top it off 🙂

We ended our night nice and cozy with our brownie creation and some Narcos Mexico…pretty darn perfect!

What’s your favorite type of sushi roll? Or are you a sashimi person? Have you seen Narcos? Let’s chat in the comments 🙂

Kickin KAsian

I’ve never thought about doing or going to a crab boil and I have no idea why! The other week the idea struck me and it seemed like a fun little experience so we looked up some places.

We decided on Kickin KAsian! Honestly, I am a bad, bad foodie because I’ve never opened crab and had no idea what to expect.

We got seated and got our bibs and ordered…

We got shrimp with mushroom and quail eggs (also never had quail eggs)

20180824_174627And king crab with corn, potatoes, and brussel sprouts

20180824_174622

We seasoned them medium spicy (not that spicy, would go spicy next time) and got their KAsian seasoning on one (cajun spice mix) and Garlic KAsian (cajun with garlic) on the other.

They brought us scissors and a cracking device. The shrimp was easy enough to peel, but the crab was sometimes a stickler.

We would have been okay with spicier seasoning, but otherwise the shrimp and crab were both delicious choices.

The quail eggs were like miniature versions of chicken eggs. Be cautious of the mushrooms though because they get super juicy and will squirt if you bite into it…definitely a one mouthful and be done kind of thing.

This was a very interesting experience all together…it gets pretty messy, but at the end of all the work you get some yummy chunks of seafood so I can’t complain!

We ended our night with SomiSomi! Ube flavored soft serve with nutella coated taiyaki and oreo crumble…NOMS!

Have you guys ever been to a crab boil type place? What did you think?

Industry Cafe and Jazz

As much as we love revisiting our favorite food spots we also love finding new food to experience. Living in LA makes it pretty easy to have those foodie experiences. I feel so spoiled to live in a city where you can find pretty much whatever type of food you are looking for with a simple visit to Yelp.

That being said, I have no idea why it took us this long to try Ethiopian food. I feel like we’ve been meaning to for years now, but it just never happened. One Friday night we found a spot and made the leap.

Industry Cafe and Jazz seemed like a great idea-the reviews were great, the food looked delish, AND there was jazz! What more could you want?

When we got there the band was getting ready and we got seated immediately. It’s a small space, but it was filled with talking and laughter. It would be a great place to bring a group of friends.

The menu was small which I liked because it makes it a bit easier to choose. We went with the Lamb Tibsi and Doro Wat. For our sides we got collard greens and red lentils.

The Lamb Tibsi was spicy and filled with chunks of lamb, while the Doro Wat was slightly sweet from the cooked down onions. The chicken leg in the Doro Wat was tender and flavorful and the hard boiled egg had taken in some flavor from the rich onion sauce.

I believe the collard greens were steamed or sautéed, but still had a nice bite which was a good contrast to the lentils. Speaking of, the lentils were soft and almost creamy in texture. It was warm and had a slight sweetness which balanced the spicy lamb.

It was all served on a big piece of Injira that soaked up all the flavors. The Injira was very interesting and unlike any other bread/pancake/carb I have ever had. It was spongy and soft. It had this sour flavor that was definitely not unpleasant. I had a friend describe the taste as similar to sourdough bread.

We were also brought a small basket filled with more Injira to eat our food with. You do eat with your hands and I will say that despite washing my hands multiple times they smelled like the spices from the food. Being Indian, my hands smelling like food doesn’t bother me, but I wanted to put it out there just in case…

Everyone was so friendly and helpful in navigating through the menu. The food and the music really made for a lovely night and it’s an experience I am glad to have had.

Obviously dessert is always on our list of plans and after all the flavorful spices I needed something cool, creamy, and mild (cool and creamy-what’s new?).

Magnolia Bakery was pretty close so we dropped in so I could get a fix of their banana pudding. I know they have other flavors of their banana pudding, but my go to is the original. I had a few bites and saved the rest for later.

Hubby ended up getting frozen yogurt and we wrapped up our night by walking around WeHo while he ate his dessert. It was a pretty great ending to a fun little date night 🙂

Have you guys had Ethiopian food? What did you think?? Let me know in the comments below!

Day In the Life+Full Day of Eating

I know that I tend to write about trips, adventures, and eating out, but, friends, that is not a full picture of my day to day. Both the hubs and I work full time so there are days where we are at work all day and then, sadly enough, days when we’re off by ourselves.

Today, I thought I would bring you along on a day where I am home alone! Usually these types of days go depending on what errands need to be run and what tasks absolutely need to get done that day.

20170809_094745

The Island Coconut by Green Mountain is the current fave

I always start my morning off with coffee and catch up on emails while sipping up all the goodness 🙂 I think my favorite part has been picking out my daily cup. I also like to spend this time figuring out what I want/need to do and having a general idea of when/how I should go about doing the things.

If you know me you know that I wake up hungry so an hour into scheduling and emailing and I am VERY ready for breakfast!

20170801_094633

Seasoned with turmeric, black pep, Himalayan pink, and chili flakes for some heat 😉

I actually mixed up some cruciferous mix (Trader Joe’s) and ended up scrambling this beautiful egg and throwing it all into a tortilla with shredded cheddar. This has been a great way to get in some extra veg and start my morning off strong

After breakfast is when I will start writing blog posts, looking through pics for post inspiration, and reading all of your lovely blogs 🙂

20170809_094806

Lunch time rolls around and on this day I wasn’t feeling too hungry so I sautéed tofu and threw it over some spinach topped with this new feta dill dressing. It was delicious, light, and just what I needed.

20170801_142557

I did end up having a few of these pita chips with it because they just taste so good…

20170801_142648

I’ve been on a watermelon kick so that ended up being “dessert”

20170809_094643

On this day it was a fun surprise because the hubs had an early day and got to come home so we ended up running some errands together (grocery stores and a bakery).

We had a fun impromptu date night and went to see Baby Driver and grab dinner out. The movie was good, but not what I was expecting. If you’ve seen it let me know what you thought!

20170801_192306_1502303134632

It’s a bit hard to see, but check out this double rainbow we saw after the movies…so pretty!

Dinner was at Urban Plates. It was like a cafeteria type set up-we got the “plates” which includes a protein, two sides, and a piece of bread.

I went with salmon, mashed potatoes (so good!), and broccolini

20170801_184511

The hubs had chicken, cucumber/tomato/mozz salad, and squash in tomato sauce. The squash was seriously amazing. Perfectly cooked and so savory!

20170801_184532

The bakery I mentioned earlier on our errand run was Nothing Bundt Cakes. They had a new confetti cake flavor and I had to try it! It ended up being so. so. good. and the perfect  sweet treat to end the day.

20170801_143922

We always like to end our days with a sitcom of some kind-Big Bang and Happy Endings are two that we’ve been really enjoying!

I know it wasn’t the most exciting day in the life post, but I wanted to share a more typical type day in my life. I hope you guys enjoyed and please let me know what you thought about the post!
