Working out and staying sane

Hello Friends!

The craziness continues to run rampant in our household as we have both finished up our last weeks at work, worked on packing and trying to keep the house clean for showings simultaneously, and move!

I wanted to talk to you guys about what keeps me sane during these crazy times. Besides my amazing husband, family and friends; taking 40 to 60 minutes to workout has helped keep me physically and mentally together.

I think I took for granted exactly what some form of exercising does until our recent TX trip. We didn’t try to find a gym and because of humidity were unable to walk or hike as much as we normally would have.

When we came back and started returning to the gym and home workouts I just felt lighter and in a better head space.

Working out is basically like eating or breathing in our house so we really don’t think about it or what it’s doing for us until we stop.

There are so many benefits to being active- both physical and mental. I don’t talk about it on this blog as much as I do about food, but it brings me just as much happiness.

I always preach that you don’t need to go to a gym and do “exercises” to be healthy. You simply need to be active in whatever way brings you happiness. Dancing, walking, barre, sports-it all gets the blood flowing and the endorphins going. Sooooo if you don’t already I highly encourage you to get some movement into your day!

After all, couldn’t we all use more endorphins? I think so!

Restaurants Re-Visited

No matter how many times I say or write “we will be back” it seems like an impossible feat in LA. There are a few places that we do go back to often and you guys know because the food keeps reappearing on posts, but here are a few restaurants that we “re-visited” in anticipation of leaving LA and also because they are just so darn delicious!

Claudine’s is a place we’ve come to 4 or 5 times after discovering it. I absolutely love that they have some fun unique items on their menu. They literally have something for everyone whether you are looking for something healthier or a little indulgent-they have you covered!

Great White is a spot we visited over a year ago and it’s probably one of hubs favorite places because of their breakfast burrito. We re-visited and got the same things-breakfast burrito and chicken sandwich. The fries are nothing to laugh at either. Two words to describe the food? Messy and delicious!

Mendocino has some yummy sandwiches and our first love was the Study of Heat. We love going back quite possibly due to nostalgia. We are always looking for spots where they can open closer to us, but until then we are willing to make the drive or take a quick lunch detour upon spotting one πŸ˜‰

Oh the food we will eat…Bestia

Hubs and I love a good date night and it’s even better when things just fall into place. I had bought tickets for this musical comedy show at Second City and we were figuring out when and where to do dinner.

Somehow hubs was able to secure a reservation for 2 at 10pm. I don’t know if that sounds crazy, but this place is hard to get a table at. I had also had this place bookmarked for a while and so dinner at 10pm sounded like a fantastic idea πŸ˜‰

Despite having reservations we still waited about half an hour, but there was seating outside with heaters so we were perfectly content (albeit a little starved).

When we finally got seated we looked over the menu and and decided pretty quickly! We decided to start with the smoked chicken liver pate and bone marrow that came with pasta.

While waiting for our food we took in the ambiance. It’s a very LA place…the music is loud, the decor is industrial hipster vibes. You’re yelling the whole time because you can’t hear each other even though you’re sitting next to each other…this can be fun sometimes, but this night I just wanted to have a conversation and break bread without breaking my eardrums!

Now the apps…

I was a leeeetttle bit worried about the chicken liver pate because I am not a chicken liver person or any liver really. This ended up being absolutely fine and hubby really enjoyed it. It arrived with warm bread and let’s be honest…you can spread anything on warm bread and it’s fantastic. It also came with a little side of bbq sauce and you were supposed to spread some pate and spread some bbq sauce and eat! It paired pretty nicely-the umami with the slightly sweet and tangy.

The bone marrow dish came with a real bone and the lovely lady that brought it over scraped it out table side over this delicious pasta. This was my favorite dish of the night! The pasta was perfectly cooked and the flavors were savory and oh so good.

For our main we ordered the margherita pizza (between San Diego and here, we were on a kick). This wasn’t the best margh I have ever had by any means, but I don’t think Bestia is the place to come for pizza. If I ever got a do over I would go with one of the other entrees.

San Diego Round 2

I don’t know if you guys remember/know, but I had made a trip to sunny SD in April for a leadership conference. It’s a 3 part conference and part 2 was in June.

Hubs and I drove up there Tuesday and had some delicious eats and treats when I wasn’t at the conference.

For lunch before the conference we went to Big Thyme and ordered a reuben sandwich and salad to share. The hubs loved this salad so much that he ended up going back the next day and getting one for lunch!

Yes, that is watermelon in our salad and it was actually pretty wonderful! I’m not a big fan of fruit in my salads, but maybe I am??

Night one, some friends, the hubs, and I went to Barbusa. I was hungry and luckily were able to get seated immediately. We ordered some apps to share: arancini, cheese bread, and burrata.

The hubs and I shared a salad and this salmon dish!

Afterwards we walked around Little Italy and fell in love with the delicious smells of pizza and pasta and the sweet stores that lined the streets.

I’m guessing we must have been on an Italian food kick because for dinner the next night we went to Isola Pizza Bar. Obviously we had to get the margherita pizza, but for our apps we got the shrimp and polenta along with a roasted veggie dish that was listed under the salads.

I was intrigued by the dessert menu and while hubs got gelato I got a tiramisu…it was pretty delicious!

After a morning of conferencing the next day we drove home. It was a fun trip and even though I didn’t get too many pictures of everything seeing the ones I did take gives me the warm fuzzies πŸ™‚

I hope you all have such a great weekend! We have family coming in today for some fun celebrations this weekend and I am so looking forward to it!

What I Eat in a Day

Welcome to another What I Eat in a Day πŸ™‚ This is one from during the week. I tend to eat “cleaner” during the week and save my sweets and stuff for the weekend. I don’t do it on purpose and if I end up eating a cookie during the week it’s no biggie, but in my life it just works out that way and I’m pretty happy with it!

Breakfast: Scrambled eggs, potatoes, kale, tomatoes and a couple of pieces of smoked salmon. I’ve been hungrier recently so consciously adding a little extra protein here and there has been helping keep me fuller for a little longer!

Lunch: Grilled chicken and cheese sammy on a protein bagel with kale and tomatoes, potatoes. I love to use up whatever veggies I make or have throughout the day. It saves me time and no waste!

Dessert: Chocolate covered almonds. O.M.G are these so good and addictive! It’s great for that post dinner sweet tooth or if you need a chocolate fix.

Austin

Good morning people!

I hope you are all having a lovely day/week/month! I wanted to share with you guys our Austin trip. I didn’t end up taking many pictures so I am able to get 4ish days in Austin into one blog post πŸ™‚

We had decided to do this Austin trip because we wanted to check out the area and see if it’s somewhere we would settle down at. After a series of unfortunate/stressful events we are seeing it as signs from God that Austin is not the place for us!

We had coffee and snacks at the airport, but I only got the coffee

Even though it’s not the place for us to stay forever (I’ll never say never so who knows), it is the place for BBQ and tacos. So after getting our rental car and dropping of bags at our AirBnB we headed to Terry Black’s for brisket.

We’ve heard that Texas is “cow country” and they have the best brisket in all the land. After having Terry Black’s I do agree…

We also ended up getting this massive rib which ended up being my favorite part of the meal along with cornbread and green beans. All I can say is that all of the food was delicious. I highly recommend!

We came around 3/4pm and it was great timing because the line was short. The next time I turned around to look at the line we had gotten our food and were in the process of finding a table. Let me tell you that line was out the door!

The next day we headed into Dallas to meet up with B’s little brother and his GF. While waiting for them we (read: I) found myself getting a little hungry so we stopped by Malai. They gave us complimentary sticky rice with this eggplant sauce and we ordered the tuna spring rolls.

The tuna was seared rare and the rolls were so light and fresh! Perfect for a warm day!

We ended up getting tacos with them at Velvet taco, but I wanted to be present and involved and got 0 pictures!

Dinner that night was kind of a fail. The hubs and I were super excited about Austin Taco Project-they had such great reviews on Yelp, but the food was not great.

The next day we started off fresh at First Watch. When we lived in Oklahoma we used to go here somewhat often and sadly there’s not one in CA so we had to have it while we were in TX.

I ordered a garden hash with eggs over easy! I had no idea it would come with fruit and buttered toast (it had been that long since we had been). This hash is something I would absolutely get again if we had a First Watch next to us.

B got their breakfast protein (power?) wrap and it came with some fruit too. Win for us!!

We didn’t end up eating lunch since we had a somewhat late breakfast. We hit up a couple of malls and watched Ma before heading to dinner at Bun Belly. We were initially thinking pizza, but the pizza place ended up being too far from our post dinner plans so we switched it up a bit and boy are we glad!

We ordered the beef belly, the soft-shell crab, and a vegetarian one with eggplant. We also got some shrimp spring rolls to start!

The shrimp spring roll was delicious! It was light and the paired so well with their warm peanut sauce. I have never had warm peanut sauce with the cool spring roll, but wowza was it amazing!

The baos were so yummy too. The bun was so soft and fluffy and the fillings were so flavorful. I loved the contrast in textures with the crab and vegetarian one, but my favorite was the beef belly πŸ˜‹

What I failed to mention was that before dinner we had stopped by Uncle Nicky’s and grabbed a cruller. This was one of the things I had seen on Insta before Austin and pretty much knew I needed to try before leaving. After dinner we headed back to the car and ate this and it was honestly so delicious and sweet and light. I was sad we didn’t have another!

We walked around till the improv show we had bought tickets for and that pretty much concludes our last full day in Austin.

We woke up the next morning pretty excited to be coming back home. We had already decided on Torchy’s for breakfast tacos before heading to the airport so that’s what we did.

These tacos were really good, but the one I always love is The Wrangler (I think that’s the brisket one).

We had some time to kill so we mosied around the area before heading to return our rental and get on our flight.

That concludes our Austin trip! I am honestly so glad we visited Austin and if you’ve never been I think you should. Besides having great tacos and brisket they have some lovely people and it’s worth it to go for just that.

Roses and Thorns

Helloooo…

The title of the post might not make much sense unless you’ve done roses and thorns. It’s basically where you talk about your rose (highlights, a good thing that happened) and your thorn (downer of your day).

This is not a particularly juicy post, but I do find it therapeutic to sometimes get out onto paper/blog what’s running through my head.

On Thursday I have my Austin post scheduled and it’s not the most complete overview of our trip in Austin because 1) that trip was rough 2) I’ve been trying to take a breather from taking pictures of everything.

After the NY posts I hit a wall-like a major wall. I did not want to write another post or take another picture so I tried to not force it and only took pics of what I wanted when I wanted. It was great, but I do have some regrets because some great fun was had and some delicious food eaten.

Giving myself that time though made me realize why I started doing this in the first place and helped me realize how much I do love and enjoy it.

During the Austin post I don’t talk much about the “series of unfortunate events” as I think of it in my head. Mostly because I think Austin is a great city and just because we aren’t meant to be there means absolutely nothing.

The series of unfortunate events include, but are not limited to our house being in escrow when we left LA and the buyer pulling out and my dad being in the hospital. The cherry on top was returning to LA, sitting in 1 hour and 40 minutes of traffic with a pretty bad uber driver. The sprinkles on the frosting had to be being locked out of our house with our luggage because during a showing or inspection the lock we had taped over to prevent someone from locking was locked.

You guys, that’s not even all of it, but I think burdening you with that is more than enough.

All of that being said I am so grateful to be back at home, to have a great real estate agent who I know is handling things, secured an apartment for our next move to San Bernardino county, knowing my dad is going to be okay, and having a pretty great husband to help carry the load.

Meals and Things

I thought it would be good to share some random meals I’ve taken pictures of in the last couple of weeks!

I think you guys saw this on my Sardinely Delicious post, but I really enjoyed this mish-mosh of sardines, kale, tomatoes, and crackers!

Keeping up with the fish theme I am back into lox and avocado toast-I’ve been loving it with a few slices of tomato stacked between the lox and avocado. It’s just so satisfying and delicious!

This gorgeous dinner was at Joey one late Saturday Night. We had the Korean Cauliflower, Lobster Ravioli, and Molten Chocolate Cake. It was an excellent meal!

We are loving sandwiches in this household (not anything new). This particular one was made by us for dinner one night-slices of beef, white cheddar, and a mixture of horseradish and mayo all sandwiched between two slices of sourdough.

This one was from the mall food court and featured turkey, chipotle mayo, tomato, avocado, and other goodness! The panini press crunch is everything!

We shared this hazelnut chocolate from Godiva after the panini as our dessert…we always need dessert.

We tried out a new bakery and got a few things to try! The almond cake was a bit dry, the nutella cheesecake was good, and the fruit topped parfait/cake item was delicious πŸ™‚

Sardinely Delicious

Get it?? Sardinely like certainly?? Okay maybe just me, but y’all know I’m a big cheese bun πŸ™‚

Anywho, if you haven’t already guessed this post will about my current favorite thing to eat-sardines. My sardine journey began one day at Costco. The sweet sample lady was handing out smoked sardines on Ritz crackers…I gave it a shot and became a little obsessed.

I love the Wild Planet Wild Sardines in Extra Virgin Olive Oil Lightly Smoked. Say that 5 times fast!Β I could eat it pretty plain with a little mayo and be perfectly content, but crackers and bread are always nice too.

I won’t lie I start loving food items because of the taste and then I really get excited when I learn that they are good for you and that’s kiiiindaa what happened here.

Sardines are great for you!

They have Omega-3s which is an anti-inflammatory and it can keep your blood pressure down!

Great source of protein especially for someone like me who could live of carbs, fruits, and veggies. I workout plenty and it’s nice to know my body is getting some good protein to help it build up the bones and muscles I work so hard to healthify.

I’m not a fan of dairy milk and even almond milk I only drink occasionally (read: with cookies). I do have cheese, but I still think about calcium intake and sardines are a great source of calcium.

Life After NY

We woke up dark and early to catch a Lyft to JFK. Speaking of JFK, what a great airport! I don’t know if it was the time or day of the week that we were there or what, but it was so mellow and there was barely a line-very unLAX.

We grabbed some breakfast and headed to our gate. We could only find Dunkin’ Donuts so I got a egg white veggie sandwich and hash browns and hubs got an everything bagel and cream cheese. I don’t think he was quite ready to let go πŸ˜€ We also got a strawberry glazed donut with sprinkles to share!

We hopped on the plane and had a really lovely 5 hour trip back to LA. I really enjoyed the snack box they gave us that had Chobani vanilla yogurt, granola, apple slices and this flat blueberry muffin thing. I loved that muffin and wish I could figure out where they sold it!

We arrived in LA at 10:50am (nothing like gaining a few hours back) and had all the intentions of going to the beach, but we were exhausted! We instead went to see if we could get movie tickets to Avengers: Endgame and get Chick-fil-a to eat at the park.

We did both and were very pleased with ourselves. After we arrived at home we unpacked, threw in laundry, showered and who knows what else before heading out to Endgame.

It was a 3 hour movie and holy cow was it the movie of all movies! If you’re an Avengers fan…you’ve probably already seen it!

We went home and grabbed some TBell for babes and In n’ Out for me. We had also planned it out and grabbed cake and a cookie from Susie Cakes!

Friday morning we woke up and headed out to our first gym session since Philly. It felt good to be in the gym! I was so hungry after this session and we came up with a breakfast plan.

Yogurt with granola and honey plus a shared PB and banana sandwich!

We had reserved tickets for The Broad for when we got back from our trip and so we showered up and headed out. The Broad was incredibly cool and saw some really interesting pieces.

I guess neither of us were ready to let go of NY quite yet because we headed to Langer’s for pastrami sandwiches. We shared a sandwich which was great because each half could have been one sandwich.

This was a really great sandwich! It was meaty and vinegary from the kraut and mustard…all the good things!

Having not been to Century City in a minute we headed over to check out some stores and grab a little sweet treat from Shake Shack- their strawberry shake.

After wandering around and finding a skirt we headed off to a free comedy night at a pizza shop we had also been wanting to check out #notreadytoletgoofNY

We shared a pie and enjoyed some comedy! Can you tell how much we really enjoy comedy?

We picked up some cake on the way home, but by the time we got home we were too exhausted to even bother. Sleep really took the cake πŸ˜‰

Saturday morning was for all the tidying up and touch ups. Since we’re moving, we’re going to be putting our house on sale so we had some decluttering to do before pictures. We spend most of the morning doing this, but before that we had to gather supplies and give ourselves some fuel.

That fuel came in the form of Pascal Patisserie. We got the breakfast burrito (my fave) and the carne asada sandwich (B’s fave). When we got home we had some cake! We finished up our tasks and cleaned up for yet another comedy show…we have a problem…

We were planning on going out for dinner, but neither of us were feeling like it so we picked up some Panang curry from Jasmine Thai. We had our second piece of cake after and called it a night!

Sunday was our last vacay day and we made the most of it by finishing up our stuff and going grocery shopping πŸ˜€ We also skipped the gym this morning and got breakfast from Pascal. We got a bagel (there’s that NY thing popping up again) and an omelet sandwich.

We also picked up a pistachio croissant and an almond chocolate croissant. We split the pistachio one and saved the almond chocolate.

We went home after this and prepped for the week and finished tidying up. I started getting hungry later into the evening and so we figured we’d better grab dinner.

Which brings me to another thing we did again was pick upΒ Thai food from another place called Box Thai.

We got dumplings, chicken satay, and an order of pad kee mao. It was SO good! We will definitely be back here for more Thai!

We ate the almond chocolate croissant for dessert and chilled out for the rest of the night! That concludes our vacation-definitely had some vacation blues, but we were both ready to get back to some normal eating!
