August Update on Cutting Down

I think my post went up for “cutting down” towards the end of July, but I started the whole process the beginning of July when we moved so I thought it would be a good time to give an update.

I’m not sure if I mentioned this, but I did unsubscribe from emails from a lot of retailers. I felt like between ads on Insta, YouTube, and Facebook I didn’t need more temptation. This has helped a lot because I’m not getting pummeled with deals from my favorite spots to shop AND I don’t feel like I am missing out on any great deals since I don’t know about them to start.

As a side note, this has made it much easier to clean out my inbox. I don’t wake up to 50 email notifications every morning.

I will say though that I haven’t felt tempted to buy anything yet. I am very surprised by this because I thought the itch would have started by now, but I am grateful it has stayed away. I don’t know if it’s because I am still settling in and figuring out a schedule and have been dealing with other stressors.

I do wonder if once things get into more of a normal routine I will feel more tempted to run to TJ Maxx or Target. Speaking of Target, the Target I live around has an incredible selection of clothes and accessories. I do avoid going into that department at all costs, but it does sometimes call to me as I am heading to check out.

I have learned about some gaps in my clothes and I have learned a little more about my likes and dislikes. For example, I learned that I enjoy a wider strap when it comes to dresses/tops and not a spaghetti strap mostly because I find strapless bras annoying. I’ve also noticed that I avoid certain pieces of clothing because of comfort, the way it looks on me, pattern, straps, whatever it may be.

Last but not least, because I don’t have the option of buying new clothes I have been doing a better job and wearing pieces I normally don’t and making sure I rotate through my clothes. I’ve definitely been wearing the crap outta all the clothes I brought in preparation for a hot summer.

I know it’s only been a little more than a month, but I am pretty proud of myself. I am keeping my fingers crossed that I am able to complete this challenge! I’ll do my best to continue to do a monthly update.

I am curious if any of you have done anything similar to this? If you have please feel free to leave any tips on how you did it and how it was for you.

Coronado

Good morning!

On a Tuesday morning I headed out with a friend and co-worker to the last session of our leadership conference. I don’t know if you remember, but for the session in April and June hubby was able to come along. Sadly, this time around he had work and couldn’t make it. I was bummed, but super grateful I didn’t have to make the trip alone!

I was excited to have the opportunity to finish the program, but also sad that it would be the last time we would be coming. It was a really great conference and I learned a lot about leadership and myself.

While in Coronado, we made the most of it and had some yummy food.

The first night we went to Maretalia. It’s a lovely Italian joint on the Island and we walked to it. The walk felt long since we were all hungry, but once we got there we were in carb heaven!

After sitting down we were offered bread and a lovely gentleman came around with the bread choices. There was no choice for me other than the big fluffy slices of focaccia. The bread was salty and soft and served with softened butter in a pool of olive oil with a piece of roasted garlic on top. I could eat that bread everyday for the rest of my life!

I ordered the shrimp campanelle and boy was this good! The shrimp were perfectly cooked and there were tomatoes that added brightness and acidity. I asked for some parm on top which added a nice flavor and depth. The pasta was cooked al dente and I am sitting here drooling thinking about this dish.

By the time we left the sun was starting to set and our walk home was much easier with the carbs in our belly. We were all tired from our day of traveling and conferencing that we headed back to the hotel to settle in and get some rest.

I had a hard time sleeping-always do without hubby-but I finally gave up, woke up a little earlier than planned and headed to the gym.

As much as I enjoyed the conference it was a lot of sitting and I am not used to that much sitting. The morning workouts gave me life and helped with the restlessness that sitting for long periods causes me to have.

After conference we made dinner plans and walked to another spot on the island-Miguel’s. I had been craving tacos and tortilla chips and queso and had gotten many recommendations for this place. It was another 30 minute walk to this place (we passed Maretalia on the way).

Once we arrived we were seated and served warm chips, salsa, and queso. The chips were salty and crispy, the queso was creamy, and the salsa was bright. It was really difficult to stop eating them.

The server was really nice and let us know we could order two different kinds of tacos so we could try more than one. I ordered a swordfish taco and a ahi tuna taco. The swordfish was grilled and flavorful and served in a soft corn tortilla. The ahi tuna was seared and chopped up and served in a hard taco shell.

If I am being completely honest, I ate most of the ahi tuna taco and half of the swordfish taco. I ended up eating the rest of the swordfish, but not the whole taco. It was served with rice and beans and I think I took one small bite of each, but was too full to bother even trying to eat anymore.

We walked to Hotel Del Coronado and saw these incredible sand castles. I think there had to have been a competition of some sort. We ended up unintentionally taking the long way home so it was a long walk, but we didn’t mind. We were fueled with yummy food and beautiful weather.

After the conference Thursday we headed back home. I was super excited to see hubby, but by the time I got back he was still at work. I did come home to this which was so sweet. He is honestly the best husband ever!

We ended up going out to sushi that night at Sushi Hachi. We ordered some edamame and a few rolls. We both really enjoyed these and they were on the fresher end of the spectrum rather than the fried or cooked rolls we sometimes get. I feel like this might turn into one of our regular sushi spots πŸ™‚

Kodiak Cakes Review

Good morning everybody!

Today, I am bringing you a review of the Kodiak Cakes Protein-Packed Power Flapjacks in the buttermilk flavor. Phewww that was a mouthful!

I love finding more nutrient dense options of the things I already love and eat. I used to get the Kodiak Cakes pancake mix and make it myself, but these seemed like a great option for people who are super busy and need a quick breakfast or even just something easy to make at work with a microwave.

I enjoy pancakes and waffles, but I get full fast so I have a hard time having both pancakes and something else to make sure I get protein. If I just have a waffle or pancake I tend to be hungry again in about an hour or so. Nobody got time for that, so I wanted pancakes that had some protein to keep me fuller for longer.

When you open the box they have already packaged up each serving size to help make it easy if you do need to pack it up for work because you can just throw it in your lunch bag. The con here is that it’s not environmentally friendly…

Of course, it doesn’t matter how quickly you can make it or how much protein it has if it doesn’t taste good. Thankfully, this tastes like pancakes, but the texture is a little on the drier end of the spectrum. I don’t mind because I spread creamy peanut butter on and dip it in maple syrup, but if you’re planning on eating it plain just know it’s dry so bring almond milk to drink.

Fun find and favorites

Hello and good morning!

I’ve recently come across some things that I am kiiindaa infatuated with and felt the need to share them with you.

Let’s jump in and get the show rolling…

My first favorite is tailoring πŸ˜€ I’m a pretty shmall human-I’m about 5 feet tall so I really should be getting more things tailored, but since I have recently decided to forego buying any new clothes I thought it a good idea to alter a couple of pieces to make them more “me.”

I had gotten a pair of summery/beachy pants from TJ Maxx and I got them shortened so I would actually wear them and I am super excited to wear them now that they fit better!

I also decided to shorten the sleeves on this Aritzia dress so now it’s more of a cap/tshirt sleeve situation. It makes it more wearable for me since California runs warmer and it’s definitely more my style!

This Lubriderm moisturizer with SPF is pretty fantastic. We needed a good, everyday moisturizer and this one seemed like a good pic since it had a little bit of SPF in it and I can be lazy about putting on SPF. There is a VERY light clean scent which I love!

Speaking of SPF this face moisturizer from Kiehl’s has been great for the summer. It’s much more lightweight than the cream formula (it’s the texture of drippy lotion) so it’s great for these hotter months when you don’t want a heavy cream on your face. It also contains SPF 30 which is great since I, again, suck at applying SPF AND it’s the same price as the cream BUT for more product! Win, win, win!

I’ve been wanting a pilling remover tool since I heard about it from YouTube, but I kept forgetting about it. I know there’s one on Amazon (let’s be honest, there’s probably 50), but we got ours from Wall-Mart and it’s the greatest, most satisfying invention in the history of man.

We primarily wanted it for an ottoman we had that was in great condition, but had a ton of pilling all over it. We used it and it did such a great job cleaning it all up and the ottoman looked so incredible. It was so satisfying to use it and see the pilling being removed and a beautiful ottoman being revealed. It’s also great for pants, jackets, really any fabric with pilling this will nip in the bud!

Okay, I love summer fruit and mangoes definitely top that list. I could literally eat mango all day…bowls and bowls of cut up mango, but for whatever reason I don’t seem to be good at picking them. On a recent trip to Costco I found these and I am so glad I did because once they are fully ripe they are so sweet and juicy! I highly recommend if you also have trouble finding that perfect mango. I’ve been through one container already and they have all been perfect!

In terms of selling the house we’ve made a few repairs and gotten things in order to continue the escrow process. We are ready to be done!

We’ve also been selling things on FB market (thanks for the tip Mackenzie) in order to downsize and live a little more clutter free!

In terms of staying strong and healthy we’ve been working out (basically everyday since I had been waiting to start work). I continue cycling through our gym, the apartment gym, and HIIT at home. We’ve been loving post dinner walks when the weather cools down.

For work-hubs started a while ago and I have completed hospital orientation and I am about to wrap up floor orientation.

Cutting down and Cleaning out

I’ve been avoiding writing this post because writing this post means I will have to stick with it…

Long story short I decided after our move that I will not be buying any more clothes, accessories, or shoes until after July 2020. I kinda avoided telling hubby for a little while too because, again, saying it out loud would make it a concrete thing that I would have to follow through on.

I took the plunge and told him because honestly there’s nothing quite like a move to encourage you to get rid of things and question your decision of buying stuff. We did donate a bunch of clothes before the move and some after, but it really opened my eyes to the amount of things we acquired in just a couple of years.

The things I have now are things I feel like I will wear and use and love, but I really wanted to test that theory out. Do you guys have a ton of things to wear but only rotate through a few things? I know I do, so I wanted to see if I could encourage myself to wear more of things I already own.

At the end of the year the things I haven’t worn are going to be donated. I feel good and strong about this now, but I know it will get tough because I do love clothes and accessories and shoes…

I decided to do this for a few reasons:

  1. Avoid being wasteful-I keep buying new things so I don’t get as much use out of my clothes as I could/should.
  2. Easy to keep organized-I don’t have clothes overflowing out of my dresser/closet. This also allows me to see what items I am missing or what items I may need more of.
  3. Buying clothes/shoes/accessories is more of a want at this point and not a need. I have enough clothes for every occasion and season. I have more than enough jackets for the winter and plenty of dresses and shorts for the summer.
  4. A perk of not buying more stuff is saving some money honeyyy πŸ˜‰
  5. It will get the creative juices flowing in terms of coming up with outfits and pairing things up that I may not have thought of otherwise.

I have plenty of rational reasons in my head, but I am keeping my fingers crossed that I am able to stick it out and do the darn thing. I will definitely do my best at keeping you guys updated…maybe even like a monthly update?!

Hey sweet people!

I have had a few things piling up that I have been loving and wanting to talk to you about so I thought what better time than the present? Yeah?

Let’s jump right in starting with some fashion favorites πŸ™‚

I had bought a dress from Aritzia for a special occasion that was going to be happening in the summer! I loved it, it was beautiful. Then I went to TJ Maxx and found this beauty. It’s this blushy, mauve, nudey pink color with a beautiful floral pattern and fluttery sleeves. It’s a wrap dress that cinches me nice and tight with the tie at my waist (I do wrap it all the way around instead of just tying it on the side). It is a high/low style dress which is great for a shorty like me and Β the best part? It has pockets!!

Needless to say this won by a million miles and I ended up wearing it! I learned that it would have been much better for me to be patient because this dress came in under $30 while the Artizia dress was $70!

This next dress was also a steal at around $18! I found it at Target and immediately fell in love. I have a major love/hate relationship with the Target clothing section. It’s very hard to figure out my sizing there. I am usually an XS or smaller when it comes to dresses and anytime I try on XS there it can range anywhere from fitting beautifully to looking like I’m wearing a large trash bag. I am talking about within the same brand so it’s frustrating to say the least.

I was a little nervous going into the dressing room because I knew it could go any which way, but it ended up fitting like a dream! The buttons on the dress are functional, but they don’t go all the way down. It leaves this little rectangular open space that isn’t too noticeable because once you tie the dress at your waist it all bunches and flows together.

It feels so light and flowy and perfect for a summer day! I’ve worn this dress multiple times since I got it and have absolutely loved the versatility.

I love a good pair of earrings and while at the mall with my brother in law and his GF I found these beauties at Lucky. I love that they are hoops and have this sweet pearl detailing. I found them to be just so lovely and also very versatile. You can dress them up or down!

Moving on from fashion to food…

Summer fruit is a current obsession…I’ve literally just been eating watermelon for dessert after every meal. It is sweet and hydrating and I find it much more delicious than just drinking water πŸ™‚ Besides watermelon, berries have been so incredibly yummy as well…honestly any sweet, juicy summer fruit is a favorite!

Avocado toast with tomatoes on sourdough…I may have mentioned this before, but I just can’t seem to get enough. I have literally been having this with my breakfast every morning! I love the acidity and freshness that the tomato adds and with a little black pep-omg I have died and gone to avocado toast heaven!

What I eat in a day

I’m pretty proud of myself for actually managing to take pictures of a whole days worth of eats so let’s jump in and see what tastiness awaits!

Breakfast was so yummy with avocado sourdough toast topped with tomatoes and a very soft boiled egg. I did not want my egg this soft, but that’s what happens when you are learning how to use an electric stove. Our current apartment has an electric stove/oven and it’s definitely taking some getting used to…

Oh the food we will eat…The State

During our move in week in order to get some sanity we decided to do a little date night. We went and saw a movie and happened to make in time for the happy hour menu (which is apparently all day on Monday).

It was such a beautiful day we decided to sit outside and take in the weather. After perusing the menu we decided on the Brussels sprouts, short rib tacos, and a burger.

I really loved the Brussels-the crispy, crunchy, charred pieces are always my favorite and that dollop of goat cheese on top rounded it all out and added that much needed creamy tang.

The husband really loved the short rib tacos. Besides looking beautiful (those colors!) these were meaty and fresh and crunchy and wonderful!

The burger was a wonderful cheeseburger of sorts and it did end up falling apart towards the end, but it was worth the mess. The salad on the side was really pretty and a good standard salad-nothing to write home about!

We headed out for frozen yogurt after this, but really enjoyed our experience at The State. Since our whole order was off the happy hour menu the whole thing ended up being under $30? That’s a pretty cheap date night πŸ™‚

What we’ve been doing and eating

It feels nice to be somewhat settled in and writing once again! We have finally moved into San Bernardino County and managed to somewhat organize ourselves and our lives.

Once we got everything situated into where we think we would like it we also started tackling alllllll the address changes with all the people. You guys-someone needs to invent a one stop shop way of doing this! It’s crazy how many people you have to call and how many websites you must visit to change your address.

Throughout all of the craziness we did manage to workout first thing every morning just to help the endorphins start flowing and get us both in a good head space to tackle whatever the day had in store!

During this time the cooking was minimal, but we did go out and get some fruit and snacky veggies (baby carrots).

We’ve also been trying to get a lay of the land through the food that is around us so we’ve had some fails and wins-some I took pictures of and some I did not.

My hubby loved these donuts and I thought they were mediocre…

You guys are going to think I’m nuts, but since moving here I have discovered Denny’s. I’m not crazy, but I am obsessed with their veggie egg white skillet. Only, I get it with poached eggs and it is so freaking good! I wish I had gotten a better picture, but such is life when you’re post-gym hangry πŸ˜€

I also got these strawberry pancake puppies from there because again #hangry and they smelled and tasted like heaven. I could only manage to eat one, but that one was so good I ate another. I saved the rest and tried them later that night and you guys-still incredible!

Another day’s bagel-I love a good everything bagel with lox and cream cheese. This one had tomatoes, onions, and capers too!

We went to Berries for frozen yogurt. They don’t have too many flavors, but they will take whichever flavor of yogurt you pick and smash/mix in any add-ins. It’s very similar to Marble Slab or Cold Stone, but with frozen yogurt. We picked a vanilla base with strawberries and chocolate chips. Since it was frozen yogurt it got melty pretty fast, but man was it yummy!

We’ve been trying out a local cake place and so far it’s been kind of a hit and miss situation. One we loved and some others not so much…

We went to Waba for a healthier fare and enjoyed our bowls! I was so full after this because I literally inhaled it down-totally worth it!

One particular day we headed back to LA and I had “snacks” in the form of tacos from Tocaya.Β After anything savory I immediately need sweet and so we stopped at Eataly and picked up these adorable treats!
