Staycation

The hubs and I had a week off together and instead of flying out somewhere like we normally do we decided to stick around home and discover some places, food, things that we had not yet explored in LA.

The night (Tuesday night) we made our steak dinner from Sun Basket we went to a comedy show. We love comedy and there’s plenty of it in LA. We love the Comedy Store, but are definitely going to be trying some other spots.

20190108_171542

While there we indulged in this soft pretzel with mustard and since we had an early dinner so we could make it to the show we had hot slices of pizza from Vitos afterwards πŸ™‚

20190108_20071920190108_215145

On Wednesday we woke up and worked out at the gym. We had some errands to run which included grabbing bagels and printing our tickets for Universal. We did all of that and made it home, showered, and headed out.

Once we arrived at City Walk I knew I wanted to try Voodoo Donuts. We got their mango jam filled donut with tang dusted on top! B loved it and I thought it was okay-the Tang made it super tart.

20190109_142322

We arrived at Universal around 2pm and stayed till they closed that night at 6pm. Rides now vs rides when you were a kid are totally different. I was definitely nauseated after a couple…they were still fun πŸ™‚

Of course when we went to Harry Potter world we had to get some butter beer. We got the frozen version and boy was it sweet and delicious!

20190109_153844

I couldn’t believe how realistic they make it all seem and how cool the effects are! I did do a photoshoot with this snowman. Shout out to hubs for always indulging my ridiculousness!

20190109_174601

After a full day of being active and being cold we decided to go for some warm comfort food at home. We got takeout Thai from our favorite Thai Blvd Bistro and brought it home. We stuck with our classic favorites-Pad Thai and Panang curry.

20190109_194434

Before stopping for Thai food we had made a stop to grab dessert at Porto’s. We love this place and it’s so inexpensive!

Thursday we worked out and found a nice little area to walk. We ended up walking to a lunch spot, Blue Table, we had been to once before and split a turkey sandwich and a steak sandwich.

20190110_13100520190110_131019

The steak was the favorite!

We walked from there to a frozen yogurt shop and ended up walking around with our frozen treats. We eventually walked back to our car and drove home.

During this time the hubs had been working on making some sourdough. He created starter and he made us a couple of loaves during the break. You guys, sourdough bread warm out of the oven with butter? It is everything!

On Friday we did a hike and went to brunch at our favorite Leo and Lily’s. I got a turkey club and he got a Buffalo chicken sandwich. We split them and they both ended up being just okay! I don’t know if you can tell, but we really love our sandwiches πŸ™‚

20190111_13484820190111_134900

I think I will leave it off here because Saturday deserves it’s own post. We did a little food crawl around LA and it was super tasty πŸ˜‰

Do you guys enjoy staycations?

Carmel Valley

The hubs and I had a staycation recently, but he planned a surprise getaway for us during the start of our week.

20190105_122357.jpg

We drove up the PCH (Pacific Coast Highway) to head to Carmel Valley and do a couple of hikes along the way. Sadly for us, due to the rain, we didn’t get to do one of the hikes. The other one was short and sweet, but absolutely breathtaking.

20190105_121624

That picture definitely does not do it any justice, but the rain definitely added to the beauty and our sense of adventure.

After getting lost along a dirt path and finally finding our way out and back on a nice paved road we arrived at our AirBnB. This place was like a woodsy cabin and all around us was this gorgeous greenery.

20190105_145450

It was all windows so we had some beautiful views. There was a television and we were super grateful for the heater inside because it was chilly!

20190106_085204

After unloading our things we decided to head out and explore the town a bit. We explored the shops a little and ran into some local places. We found a little shop that had some of the best spreads, dips, and caramel sauces. The great thing was we were able to sample everything πŸ™‚

After a long drive and munching on very few snacks we were ready for an early dinner. We found out that a pizza place we bookmarked was within walking distance of where we already were. Dontchya just love it when things work out like that?

20190105_165201

We moseyed on over to Little Napoli where they were pretty full with people. We decided we didn’t want to wait and grabbed a couple of seats by the bar. They had the best pictures on Yelp of this delicious garlic bread-we had to have it.

20190105_165636

We also ordered the burrata which came with some roasted red peppers. I won’t lie I thought the burrata would come with crostini or something to eat it with, but it didn’t so we just used our garlic bread. Is it a thing to just eat burrata by the forkful??

20190105_165646

We nibbled (who am I kidding, we scarfed down) on our apps and perused the menu to figure out which pizza to order. We settled on their version of a margh (surprise, surprise!).

20190105_171923

The pizza was Neapolitan style and it had a crispy crust and gooey cheese. The billowy edges of the pizza and bubbly cheese are always my favorite parts. We weren’t able to finish all of it and took the rest back to the AirBnB for later.

We ended up spending the rest of the night watching The Innocent Man on Netflix until we fell asleep. It was a pretty fantastic first day! I’ll see you Thursday for our SF adventures πŸ™‚

Have you been to Carmel Valley or Carmel by the Sea?

Workout Favorites

Happy FRIDAYYY!! Today I wanted to share with you a few workout things I have been loving πŸ™‚

The first is Pilates…I’ve been really loving incorporating Pilates movements into my strength training. Whether I’m at home or at the gym these movements help target muscles I don’t normally use if I’m just strength training or doing cardio.

I actually took a couple of Pilates classes while I was in college and really loved it. It really warms up my muscles and feels like a good warm hug. I’ve been loving it and if you wanna try it out just hit up YouTube and put in “Pilates Workout.” You’ll find a workout you will love!

The next thing is this new resistance band I got from Amazon. It’s from the brand Ethereal Gym. It’s a fabric type resistance band and man has it amped up my home workouts. I still have my elastic bands, but I’ve been feeling the burn with this guy.

20180820_121549

Going back to the Pilates-this band helps increase difficulty on some of those movements. I will say it’s a good idea to build up to this band if you are just starting to use resistance in your workouts.

Another “workout” type activity I have been loving is walking on the beach. It’s been hella hot in LA and especially in the Valley so hiking has been out of the question for me, but I do miss it. We’ve been loving going to the beach because it tends to be a little cooler by the water so we’ve been taking some strolls on the sand.

This is great because it is cooler by the water so I don’t feel overheated and cranky, I love walks, and walking in soft sand uses more energy since you’re trying to stabilize yourself.

The last item on this list is this massage roller device that looks like a scary torture contraption. I had received this back in March (I think?) in my Fab Fit Fun box. I used it for a little while then, but recently I’ve been interchanging it with my foam roller.

20180820_121645

It’s been a great tool to roll on my legs after leg day. I feel like it goes deeper than my foam roller and does a great job at targeting my tensed up muscles.

The Day Continues (SF Part 2)

If you haven’t read SF Part 1 feel free to click the link and read it now and we will wait while you catch up!

All caught up? Great! While we roamed through Golden Gate Park we made some plans for the evening. We decided to finally leave the park and head to see some other sights.

The Sutro Baths were another thing we missed last time so we went to find them and find them we did!

20180517_175646

Don’t let this picture fool you…it may look calm and serene, but it was windy AF. We did walk those ledges and the wind kept trying to blow us off, but the views were worth it!

After the bath ruins we were pretty tuckered out since we had hiked and walked and nearly died at the hand of the winds. We got in the car and headed to see the Golden Gate Bridge!

IMG-20180520-WA0016

I can’t even describe the bridge to you, but it’s a pretty cool experience. It’s touristy, but it’s an experience that I am glad to have had.

20180517_184552

After all the miles we had on our feet we decided to go and grab some dinner. Our friends had recommended this place to us because they wanted us to try Chicago style pizza and Zachary’s is the place to get it in North Cal.

20180517_201346

I couldn’t agree more!

The restaurant itself is really cool with fun art pieces all centered around their pizza and when we got there it was filled with people and the delicious smell only pizza can have!

IMG-20180520-WA0036

We ordered a small mushroom and spinach pizza and I thought we could finish it easily. HAH! I got through barely a slice and maybe a quarter before calling it quits.

20180517_203916

The crust is really crispy, but I guess it needs to be to hold up to all the layers. The sauce was the star here! It was really savory and sweet and flavorful. There was a ton of cheese Β that was super stringy and could build you a bridge from LA to SF if needed. The mushrooms and spinach added a nice textural difference.

20180517_203924

When you put that first forkful into your pizza hole you get one hot, delicious bite. That being said I love NY style pizza and even after having this I would choose the NY stuff. I liked this a lot, but it felt more like a pizza lasagna situation than pizza?!

I’m still planning on having Chicago style pizza in Chicago before I make any rash decisions πŸ˜‰

If you know us you know that dessert ensued shortly after! We hit up Fenton’sΒ for some ice-cream. I went for the blueberry cheesecake while the hubs got a chocolate peanut butter something or other. The blueberry cheesecake was a dream! The ice-cream itself was so super duper creamy and the bites of blueberry broke up the creaminess and gave a fresh fruity flavor.

20180517_212049

This was a pretty hefty scoop, but I had already taken some bites.

The evening plans I alluded to earlier were to watch Deadpool 2. We love watching movies and what better time than after a long day of traveling and sight-seeing? We picked a random theater and when we walked into our movie this is what we saw.

20180517_213730

This is seriously one of the prettiest theaters I have ever watched a movie in! I loved all the architectural details and even the curtains were so beautifully beaded. After the movie I can tell you that we went back to the AirBNB and crashed hard!

We were beat!

On Monday I will be back with another SF post so I will see you lovelies then! Have a great weekend!!

SaveSave

Hello San Francisco or SF Part 1

We had been to SF before and were a bit overwhelmed and underwhelmed all at the same time. When talking to friends we discovered we had missed a LOT and so we knew we had to return. With somewhat of an itinerary in mind this time we planned out our trip (hubby planned our trip and I nodded a lot)!

We left home bleary eyed and bushy tailed as the sun was beginning to rise! I need coffee so I had taken the time to have a cup before leaving, but did not have breakfast. Seeing as how I need to be eating all the time we made a stop and got some breakfast from McDonald’s πŸ˜€

We both got the egg white and turkey sausage bowl which comes with parmesan cheese, a wilted kale/spinach mix, and some fresh chopped tomatoes. Again, not big into egg whites, but I really enjoyed this bowl.

20180517_074822

The turkey sausage had a good savory bite to it which went well with the mellowness of the egg white. The tomatoes and parmesan added some flavor and bite to the dish while the spinach and kale added some moisture. All of it came to create a TASTY bowl that had macros AND micros which is always a win for me!

Just in case we didn’t have enough micros we had packed some carrots to munch on so we had these with our breakfast bowls πŸ™‚

20180517_074827

We also shared this delicious fruit and yogurt parfait because who doesn’t like dessert with every meal? Besides #roadtrip.

20180517_074835

Our first stop was Redwood Forest for some light hiking. After being in the car for 5.5 hours it felt AMAZING to stretch our legs and breathe in the woodsy scent of all the trees. Β There was a park and lots of picnicking areas-very family friendly!

IMG-20180520-WA0021.jpg

After getting our circulation flowing we decided to head to our AirBNB. We’ve stayed at many AirBNB’s and this one was a real winner! Everything was clean and fresh and looked super comfy (it was!).

IMG-20180520-WA0023

We checked in, freshened up, put our stuff away and headed out to our next adventure. We headed to Lou’s Cafe to grab some sandwiches and picnic at a park. We got the Hot Pastrami and Pesto Chicken. All the gourmet sandwiches are dressed with lettuce, tomato, pickles, red onions and jalapeΓ±o spread besides having their own special ingredients.

The Pesto Chicken was simple, but tasty with avocado, American cheese, pesto aioli, and chicken breast on a roll. This didn’t taste super pesto-y to me, but the flavors worked well together. The bread was kinda crusty on the outside and chewy inside so it made a good vessel.

20180517_153404

The Hot Pastrami was the favorite out of the 2. It had pastrami (duh), cheddar cheese, Lou’s sauce (Idk what this is), on a Dutch Crunch roll. The meat was super tender and there was creaminess from the sauce and cheese and freshness from the lettuce, tomato, etc. The bread added on another layer of texture by being crustier than the bread for the Pesto Chicken. It was SO. SO. GOOD.

20180517_153328

We ate our sandwiches at Golden Gate Park near the Conservatory of Flowers building and had apples we had brought from home for our dessert!

After our lunch we perused our way through the park and saw some beautiful roses in the rose garden. I honestly couldn’t help, but take some pictures of these roses. In person they were much larger and fluffier and more vibrant and as much as I knew a picture couldn’t do it justice I couldn’t help myself-they were that beautiful.

20180517_161637

We continued to walk through the park and came across a lake (we love any walk involving a water scene) and ended up spending a very long time walking around it. To be fair it was a pretty massive lake and there was a lot to see.

This waterfall being one of those things. It was so cool because there were stairs leading all the way up the waterfall so you could actually see each part of the waterfall!

20180517_171439

These duckies were the other thing I couldn’t help gushing over. I mean, how cute are they??!!

IMG-20180520-WA0030

Okay, friends my initial plan was to make this post into 2 parts, but seeing as how long this has already been I may have to make into 3 (possibly 4) posts. Stay tuned for the next post to read about what we did after our long walk in the park!

Have you guys been to SF? What are your favorite spots??

Half Day in the Life

I thought it would be fun to bring you guys along for a part day in the life! We had a pretty fun and active day with some good eats so why not share it? Right?!

We started our morning off with a workout at the gym. We had planned on a hike after so we grabbed some food from a Starbucks drive through.

The egg white, spinach, feta wrap for B

20180513_114043

The egg white, turkey bacon, and cheese sandwich for me

20180513_114032

And a berry trio yogurt to share!

I’m not into eating egg whites alone, but I really enjoy it from Starbucks. Is that weird?!

We went for this beautiful hike in Eaton Park and eventually got to this beautiful fall. It’s not a crazy big one, but I still love it. The view was gorgeous and it was a fun and pretty easy hike!

20180513_133248

Post hike we went and grabbed lunch from this waffle place-Wahfles. We got the Scarlette Johanson (the chicken) and the Penn Steak (the beef). Both were good!

20180513_153953

20180513_154030

We did not get a sweet waffle from here because we had one more stop before heading back home…

Donut Man!

20180513_161354

We wanted to save our sweet teeth for these donuts. We got quite a few, but we both loved the cinnamon crumb the best πŸ™‚

I hope you enjoyed this part day in the life! What have you been up to today? Let me know in the comments below!

When in Hollywood…

Do the Hollywood Hike?!?!? Or maybe it was when in Hollywood eat some Japanese pancakes? No? Just me?!

We woke up bright and early to do the Hollywood Hike which despite lack of motivation at the beginning ended up being quite rewarding. It’s a steady up hill climb, but nothing crazy.

20180504_093009

After having hiked we build up a nice appetite and found a sweet little brunch spot at WKNDR.

20180504_120941

We ordered the chicken sandwich, like we do.

20180504_120922

Then we ordered the Japanese pancakes and my life was changed.

20180504_120916

The chicken sandwich was a good chicken sandwich-crispy chicken, soft bread, etc. But the pancakes were literally like eating cake. It was moist and once drizzled with syrup they were sweet and amazing!

Post brunch dessert ended up being a walk with some fruit cart fruit. It was tangy and salty and sweet-a perfect little ending to a sweet little brunch πŸ™‚

20180504_124655

Have you tried Japanese pancakes? What did you think??

Ready to Weekend

20180503_143301

You guys! It’s been a heck of a week and I am ready to simmer down and enjoy the weekend.Β I am looking forward to hikes, movies, and you better believe some good ol’ s’mores!

Since it will be Cinco De Mayo there may be tacos involved too! Who knows? I guess we’ll find out Monday πŸ˜‰

What are your weekend plans?

Fishing around

It’s no secret we love food in this house and if we can combine that with being active-even better! We woke up in the morning and went to the gym before having a quick breakfast and heading back out for a hike with some friends.

IMG-20180418-WA0013

Post-hike we all decided to grab food so we went to Carving Board for sandwiches. Since the hubs and I had just eaten we split a side salad and the Big Kahuna which is ahi tuna seared rare, cucumbers, seaweed, tomatoes, red onions, and their spread on a yummy brioche bun.

20180414_142140

I loved the flavors of this and how well everything melded together. The side salad was really great too and perfectly dressed!

Post lunch our sweet tooths were coming out pretty ferociously and it was hot so of course, it was the ideal day for something cold and creamy! Our friends had just told us about SomiSomi and how good the taiyaki was so we couldn’t resist.

20180414_153347

The taiyaki was chewy and crunchy and it was a perfect shell for the creamy soft serve. I ended up going with the ube flavor and the hubs got the milk flavor. Both were delicious!

20180414_153438

Don’t kill me for this, but I think I may prefer taiyaki over a waffle cone now…

Have you ever had taiyaki with soft serve? Do you prefer it over the waffle cone?? Share your thoughts in the comments below!

Hiking for Bondi Harvest

Okay we didn’t actualllyyy hike for Bondi Harvest, but we did eat at Bondi after a nice long, exhausting hike.

But first, we fueled up at Starbucks with their egg white and spinach wraps-they are so good, but boy do they stay hot like a hot pocket!

IMG-20180401-WA0005

We decided to hike the Los Liones Canyon Trailhead and it was so gorgeous. You go uphill the whole hike, but the gorgeous views made all that legwork worth it. Besides that you get rewarded with a nice downhill stroll when you are heading back to the car πŸ˜‰

20180324_101245

Post-hike we wanted something wholesome and nourishing-Bondi seemed like a good choice. Hubs got the Bondi Breakfast, I got the Whirley’s Bowl, and we shared the Papaya Fruit Bowl.

The Bondi Breakfast-simple, healthy, delicious and that bread was hella’ hardy.

IMG-20180401-WA0034

Whirley’s Bowl-Pretty large piece of tilapia with cauliflower rice, avocado, yogurt tartar, slaw and salsa.

20180324_124149

The Papaya Fruit Bowl though was my absolute favorite part of the meal. This was a sweet papaya filled with coconut vanilla chia seed pudding, a scoop of acai, berries and mint.

It was so sweet and refreshing and light-such a great way to end our meal! Ever since we had this I have been wanting to go back and eat like 3 of them. So, so good!
