A Century City Adventure

When we lived in the Valley we loved heading into LA and walking around Century City. To this day it is my favorite mall and since moving out of the Valley and LA we hadn’t really visited in a while.

We changed all that and made a little date night adventure out of it. After the somewhat long drive into the city we needed a little snack to power us through so we stopped by Shake Shack and tried their Chicken Shack and got some fries. I loved the dilly flavor and the green pickles in this chicken sandwich-I would get it again! The fries are always a win because they remind me of childhood. I love how crispy they are!

While walking around we spotted Randy’s and got donuts to share because what is an adventure without donuts? These donuts were so good and had some substance to them while being so soft and pillowy and melt in your mouth!

We had meant to do some shopping, but totally got side tracked by some of the new spots that had opened up. There was toffee shop that opened up and were sampling their goods. We tried a sample of the almond toffee and their toffee popcorn-both sweet and yummy!

While passing by we saw another place sampling cheese tarts and after having a sample we had to get a couple to have. We decided on the almond and strawberry and both were so GOOD!

20191122_173335

We actually had the tarts with some coffee (I had an espresso and hubs had iced coffee) from La Colombe. It’s our favorite coffee place-they literally have some of the smoothest tasting coffee I have ever had!

20191122_173115

After Century City we went to the Grove and walked around until we were ready to visit our last two spots and head back home! It’s kind of a tradition for us to go to Vito’s Pizza and SK Donuts, but recently Alcove (for cake) has been added to that list so that is what we did and how we ended our night!

Vito’s is hands down the best NY style pizza place we’ve found in Southern California and I will always encourage anyone that is craving a NY slice and living in LA to try it out.

That’s where I’ll leave this post! Until next time friends!!

Have a great weekend!

Trader Joe’s Treats Review

We absolutely love Trader Joe’s all year round but the seasonal stuff really gets us giddy. I cannot tell you how many videos I’ve watched and blog posts I’ve read hauling and reviewing Trader Joe’s goodies this season-it’s definitely been an obsession.

Over Thanksgiving break we had hauled quite a few goodies from Trader Joe’s to try out for ourselves and since I love posts like these I figured I would share our thoughts 🙂

Jumping into our first item are the Apple Cider Cake Donuts. These were coated in cinnamon sugar on the outside which would lead you to believe they may fall in the too sweet category, but these were very mild in sweetness. In terms of texture this fell on the dryer side of things, but not in an unpleasant way. I wasn’t reaching for water with every bite, but maybe every few bites? We really enjoyed these, but I don’t think they would be a staple in our house.

The Danish Kringle in almond was something we had no idea what to expect. I knew it was a pastry and people absolutely love it, but we aren’t big pastry people (usually). THIS though was fantastic. The almond paste filling was super nice if you enjoy the flavor-if you don’t then stay away! I will also say this was SUPER sweet between the filling and the icing on top. We tried warming a piece in the microwave and in the toaster oven. The toaster oven definitely had the better texture, but be careful because the icing becomes super hot super fast.

Steering away from the sweets for a minute to check out these Cornbread Poppers. These were filled with pepperjack cheese and serrano chilis, but they are by no means spicy in any way. The outside was a cornbread with the inside filling being a gooey cheese, but when I got these I had assumed it would be a cornbread ball that had cheese and serrano chilis mixed in. Because it wasn’t that I think I was a bit disappointed, but overall these were pretty yummy.

The Soft Baked Peanut Butter Chocolate Chip Cookies are something we had been eying for a long time. I had one cookie from this and hubby finished the pack so it’s probably safe to say I thought they were fine and he LOVED them. These are super peanut-buttery in flavor and the chocolate chips felt a bit like an afterthought. If you love peanut butter cookies you will definitely enjoy these!

Staying in the cookie category this next purchase was an impulse buy. We were in line waiting to check out when we saw the customer next to us had these in her basket. Thank God TJ’s isn’t a big store because I was able to speed walk there and back in good time to check out. All that being said, these were a fail for us. I am not a big fan of crispy cookies and that is what all of these were. In my head I was imagining a variety of butter cookies, but I definitely should have looked at the images a bit closer. As I always say after one of these incidents, “at least now we know!”

The last item are these Ridge Cut Potato Chips with Horseradish and Chive. These were nice and crunchy, but not as crunchy as a kettle chip. In terms of flavor they are very similar to a sour cream and onion with a hint of horseradish. I feel like horseradish lovers and those who aren’t horseradish fans would enjoy these. I know hubby thought these were just okay, but I’ll probably have some with sandwiches and finish off the bag. The combination of us not buying chips often enough and there being a large amount of chips in the world to try I can say safely we probably won’t be rebuying these.

IMG-20191130-WA0025

If you stuck it out this long thank you so much and I hope you enjoyed this post as much as I enjoyed writing it! I know all these items weren’t seasonal, but what are some of your current favorite Trader Joe’s goodies (seasonal or not)?

Have a great week and happy Monday!

Shopping/No shopping Updates

Hi friends!

I don’t think I gave you guys an update in November with the whole no clothes/shoes/accessories shopping so I thought it would be a good time to do one now!

When I started this journey I had planned on going strong and not buying anything until July 2020, but unfortunately (or fortunately) that won’t be happening. The timeline was probably a little over-reaching for me.

I decided to do this because I did feel like I was buying things without considering how often I would use it, how it fit into my wardrobe, how long it would last among other things. I also felt like I was buying things way to frequently and I needed a cleanse of sorts.

I needed to go cold turkey and figure out how to use the clothes I had AND what pieces I gravitated towards, what I get the most use out of, and what I didn’t really look forward to wearing.

I got the answers I was looking for and found some pieces I had been looking for so I took the leap and bought them. I will go more into depth about what I got (THAT was a journey in itself) in a later post.

I won’t lie, I was pretty bummed about not being able to make it to July 2020, but I also realize that the point of this was to become a more responsible consumer and I hope I don’t forget this lesson anytime soon.

Thanks for coming along with me on this journey! I’ll see you guys next week!

What we ate on Thanksgiving

The past few years we have made burgers for Thanksgiving, but this year we decided to switch it up and go a bit more traditional. I won’t lie we didn’t really make anything from scratch (other than the Brussels we roasted and ate for breakfast 😀 ), but the meal ended up being pretty delicious!

IMG_20191128_134350

We had both sweet and regular mashed potato. The mashed potato ended up being our favorite out of these two-although I will say that the mashed potatoes weren’t as garlicky as I thought they would be?

A corn casserole dish…or as Trader Joe’s calls it Corn Pudding. This was interesting in that the top was the texture of flan.

IMG_20191128_131534

We obviously had to have gravy and were super pleased to find that Good & Gather had made a turkey gravy. This was super umami in flavor and really brought the meal together.

IMG_20191128_131609

Plus turkey and rolls 🙂 I won’t lie the turkey was turkey to me because I am usually in it for the sides, but who isn’t?

00100lrPORTRAIT_00100_BURST20191128135019312_COVER

The only thing I felt like we were missing was cranberry sauce. There’s something interesting about cranberry sauce-I didn’t think I would miss it, but while eating this all I could think was “this NEEDS cranberry sauce.”

Later on we made sandwiches with the rolls and leftovers and again I felt like the slight tart/sweetness from cranberry sauce would have taken it up a few notches. I guess we know for next time!

For dessert we had decided on pies and went for a slice of apple and a slice of chocolate mousse-both of which were really good!

IMG_20191128_140832

That concludes our Thanksgiving meal, but I can’t conclude without giving hubby a big shoutout for these pictures! Thank you babe for taking these ❤️

How was your Thanksgiving and what did you guys end up eating? Let me know in the comments!

To-Do Lists

One of the greatest pleasures in life (I think) is putting pen to paper and crossing out something you have completed.

These past couple of months I’ve been able to do that with some long-term stuff, some short-term stuff, some fun stuff, and some adult-y stuff. I’m feeling extra thankful this week for all our blessings so I wanted to share some stuff I’ve been able to cross off on my list 🙂

One of the big things was selling the house! Still very grateful and happy to have that process complete.

Buying Halloween candy after Halloween on sale is #adulting. Keeping this large bag of candy in a house with 2 people is #peterpanning.

20191102_171545

….Getting more candy was not on the to-do list, but when there’s a See’s what’s a girl to do?

IMG-20191103-WA0000

It was time for me to renew a certification so I knocked that out over the course of a few days. I was especially happy that I was able to complete it during a weekend where B had work events all weekend instead of having to do it during a weekend we were off together.

Going to Corner Bakery for breakfast had been on our list…going twice in one weekend? not so much.

Speaking of restaurants-going to Pita Street was on my list since I saw it and was super excited to check out the food. It was so so good!

I was super happy to be able to complete a student loan thing. I had talked to them on the phone to verify completion, but getting the letter and having the paper in my hand was a really big check off on the to-do list.

Is there any big or small things you guys have crossed off that meant a lot? Let me know in the comments below!

Oh the food we will eat…Combine Kitchen

Since moving I’ve been on the hunt for a brunch spot-on Yelp this place has 4.5 stars and 1085 reviews so I had to check it out.

20191108_101349

We arrived after a workout ready to eat! We ordered two savory items to share-one being the steak and egg toast and the other being the lox toast.

We tried the lox toast first which came with house cured salmon, dill cream cheese, watermelon radish, pickled red onions and candied mustard seeds served on a slice of toasted bread. I loved everything about this toast-the silkiness of the salmon, the perfect amount of cream cheese, the bite from the radish and pickled onions and the sweetness from the candied mustard seeds. It was so good!

20191108_101326

Next up was the steak and eggs which arrived with skirt steak, poached egg, topped with salsa verde on a hefty piece of garlic toast. This had a side of arugula with lemon vinaigrette which we also added to the toast to add some texture and brightness. This toast was the hardier of the two and the more savory.  It was just meaty and had some creaminess from the egg and brightness from the salsa verde, but adding the arugula helped add a freshness that it needed.

20191108_101330

I won’t lie I did add sriracha to both of these because I love some spice and I loved it that much more!

I will be back to have more food because I really, really enjoyed this place and the eats!

Things that annoy me

This is in no way meant to offend anybody, but I love reading these kinda posts and having that “hallelujah” moment so just grab a snack and have a good laugh, a vigorous nod because you get it, or leave me a comment if you’re like “you’re nuts, I love that.”

Numero uno, when I’m at the gym and doing cardio I don’t like having someone on the machine next to me IF there are multiple of the same machines open. I totally get it when there is only a few of the same type of equipment and you have no choice but to get on the one immediately next to me, but if there’s 15 in a row and nobody else is on the other 14 why must you be right next to me? WHY??

You guys, I’m a very friendly person and I am not a road rager type personality, but oh my ‘lanta does it really get under my skin when someone is in the far left going 55 in front of me and there’s no way for me to pass them, but I can see miles and miles of space in front of them and the vehicle in front of them. Is this just me?

Cellulite-why is this a thing? Also, why is it that women are more prone to having them? It’s not like we don’t have enough on our plate! I workout and eat right a majority of the time, but I definitely have some cellulite on the back of my legs and butt. Am I going to stop eating cookies? No. Do they annoy the crap outta me? Yes!

That’s all the annoyance I have in me for today! Let me know what bugs you if anything and if you find any of these things annoying or if you absolutely love/don’t mind the things I mentioned. Thanks for reading!

Can’t get enough

I have quite a few things that I can’t just seem to get enough of and I thought it would be fun to share!

Good Bones on HGTV and The Office. The first is pretty self explanatory…I love a good HGTV show. The second I never thought I would be as enthralled as I am-it’s just cringe worthy hilarity at it’s best!

These Takis and baby carrots. The combo of the spicy limey chip with the crisp, sweetness of a fresh carrot-I can’t get enough. It’s a little odd, but trust me!

20191022_152956

Hubby-made burgers. This man can make a mean burger and I am drooling just thinking about this one. Also shout to hubs for this incredible photo! Any photos you see on this blog and think, “man that’s a good photo” was probably taken by the man, the myth, the legend-my husband! Thanks babe!

IMG-20191031-WA0000

I needed a new phone case and saw an ad on Insta…funny how that works. I checked it out and fell in love with this case by Casely. They have a great selection of cases for both and Android and Apple users. After having this case for a little bit I can say I still love it!

20191026_151226

I’ve always loved pizza, but recently my love feels like it’s gone to another level. I can eat pizza for breakfast, lunch, dinner, and snacks and be perfectly content. Recently, the addition of all the veggies is all I want for a good delicious meal!

20191020_133217

Salmon is another thing I’ve always enjoyed, but recently find myself salivating at the thought of it. I’m not particularly craving any other seafood, but give some baked salmon and veggies for dinner and I am a happy girl 🙂

20191022_172527

What’s some stuff you can’t seem to get enough of?

Good food, great company

Happy Monday lovely people!

I hope you’re all kicking the week off strong! We’ve been enjoying some yummy food the past week or so and I thought it would be fun to share 🙂

We kicked the weekend off with a little date night at Paul Martin’s. We looked through the menu, but finally settled on getting a couple of mains. We had to get the short rib since it was so good last time and we got a blackened ribeye. We shared and loved both dishes!

A little flash back to the week though would give us this homemade dinner of salmon and veggies. I found this mustardy cajun sauce recipe to use and I’m a little obsessed with it. I can almost taste it!

20191029_175319

We had been on a burger kick that got interrupted by some busy schedules, but we finally jumped back on the wagon Sunday and were not disappointed. These burgers were so good-caramelized onions, garlicky cheddar cheese, pickles, lettuce, and In n’ Out spread. Also, carrot fries!

20191027_143300

I think we temporarily went crazy and decided to buy a Costco cake-the only reason this is a little wild is because we are TWO people…but we had bought this cake before and knew we loved it. The chocolate tuxedo cake is so good! I love the layers of texture and flavor! Highly recommend-even if you are only two people 🙂

20191027_161149

I love yummy food, but I have to say that good food is made a million times better by great company. I love being married to my foodie partner in crime and each day (food related or not) is a wonderful adventure with you.

That’s gonna wrap up my good eats post, but I’m dying to know what you’re good eats were in the comments below!

Salmon, salmon everywhere

I’ve been craving a good bagel and lox and since I couldn’t get that to happen I compromised and decided to buy some lox and use my Everything but the Bagel seasoning and sourdough to create a bagel feel.

I toasted my sourdough, shmeared some whipped cream cheese, sprinkled on the everything seasoning and layered on the lox. Let me tell you, it was not the same as a bagel (duh) but it was a filling and yummy lunch!

20191022_123746

I tried it with avocado (we had some ripening and in need of use) and loved it, but to be completely honest I did not enjoy this lox. I will probably be sticking with the TJ’s version. I’m super picky about flavors of fish, chicken…any meat. This was really fishy!

20191023_124645

I love having salmon once a week (hopefully we’ll work up to the twice a week), but in our small apartment it can really smoke it up when I pan cook it. I wanted an easier way to make it and decided to bake it and then put it on broil to create a little bit of a crisp on top. This salmon was so delicious!

20191022_172527

If you’re intimidated by making salmon in a pan I would highly recommend just throwing it in a 350 degree oven. For these two pieces it took about 12 minutes or so to cook and then I broiled it for a bit. I am already looking forward to next week’s salmon!

20191022_172633

What’s your favorite fish to eat? How do you cook it?
